best humidifier i have owned so far
I'm not sure why this humidifier got such a low rating. I just love mine. I do know that there was a recall on the 33250 model, which I don't believe is made anymore, but the one I have is 33222.

The way this humidifier works is a little bit different than conventional cool mist humidifiers though. It uses a pump to pump water over the permawick filter (which is made out of aluminum instead of the spongy material conventional ones use). The fan then causes air flow over the permawick which then evaporates the water to create humidity.

Pros:
-----
1) very quiet on its lowest setting (which empties a full tank in just over a day...the higher settings, about as loud as a desk fan, will do so much faster)
2) very maintenance free - All I typically do is fill the water tank.It will, however, require occasional rinsing, just as any humidifier will. (Not sure what went wrong with other ppls' versions of this model. Perhaps it is the water in my area?)
3) Curiously, the wick hardly ever gets mineral buildup like my old Honeywell (which had a conventional wick) did.
4) Evaporates more humidity than my cool mist honeywell did, but not as much as my ultrasonic or warm mist humidifiers (warm mist humidifiers are electricity hogs, however, and the white dust from ultrasonic humidifiers can damage your CD players or CD-rom drives, as i found out the hard way).
5) With my conventional cool mist humidifier, the amount of humidity it dispersed seemed to degrade as the wick got older (perhaps its ability to absorb water became weaker), and also it would degrade the longer the humidifier was run without resoaking the wick. Neither of these seem to be a problem for the Hunter humidifier.
6) No having to replace nasty, brown, crusty wicks :)...

1) The housing is a bit of a tight fit over the evaporative parts (wick, base, etc.), which may pose a convenience issue when removing the housing for cleaning
2) Because it uses a pump to drip water over the top of the permawick, you have to make sure the humidifier does not run dry, otherwise the pump will burn out (i'm not sure if it has an auto-shut-off feature, but I have never let it get low enough to find out...)

I get irritated every time I look at it
After about 1.5 months, it started leaking. Even though I filled it with filtered water, calcium deposits were all over the inside.I wiped out the inside with CLR (lime and calcium remover) and soaked the filters in CLR.Within 3 days, it was spitting out water again. And not just a little bit of water, either.I'd placed it on a huge beach towel that I'd folded up as many times as possible...maybe came to 3" of towel that it was placed on.The next morning, the towel was DRENCHED...I mean, I picked it up and water was dripping out of the towel.I phoned their "customer service" number listed in the manual about 3 times. I was on hold for so long each time, I gave up.Now it's just sitting in my living room and I'll probably throw it out.What a waste of $50.Oh, and when it WAS working, it was noisy. I had to turn my TV volume up to a level I hope did not disturb my neighbors (apartment living).

This is the worst product on the market.I have a much cheaper Holmes and it has lasted me three years so far.This is my sencond one in less than two years.The first one's motor gave out within a few months and was replaced by the company.The second one started leaking almost immediately and I found my sons wooden dresses destroyed one morning because all the water leaked out.Also it is so noisy, not a nice calm noise but an mechanical noise that let a blower sound good.I will never buy anything from them again and would rather just buy filters.

Its great when its working properly
I'm on my 4th one for this humidifier (I have the one w/o the night light)

LIKES
1) no filter to replace
2) relatively easy cleaning (just soak in vinegar/water and brush)
3) quiet enough for me to sleep on LOW
4) large 2.5 container so dont need to refill frequently
5) it works! i sleep better, and my hygrometer proves it

DISLIKES
1) it breaks down and stops working or leaks, or gurgles after 1 or 2 months
2) gets to be noisy when on MED (specially on HIGH)

Tempermental Humidifier
This humidifier looks great on paper...but in reality, it does a poor job.The first month it worked alright.It's just too loud.Even on the lowest setting sometimes it's unbearably loud and sometimes it's bearable.I never know how it's going to sound like until I turn it on.Not only is it loud sometimes, it doesn't do a very good job of rotating the water flow which leaves it stagnant and turns yellow.I have to clean it every week and not once a season as it claims.I've had it for two months now and it's leaking water and I can't figure out why...I'm going to send it back.Too bad this had to happen after the 30 days money back guarantee. ... Neti is a great practice
I've been doing Neti practice for about a year now.I suffer from allergies, and the effect Neti has had is incredible.Not only does it help clear the sinus passages, but you are left with a light, almost heady sensation.I had used pots made of plastic and ceramic before purchasing a steel one.I especially like the steel for it's ease of cleaning and the fact this this one holds more water than most, eliminating the need to refill.I highly recommend it, but suggest asking your doctor just to be safe. Effective, but hardly "Care-Free"
I am finally very happy with this humidifier, now that I have at last figured out how to best clean it (despite the unfortunately inaccurate owner's manual). This unit does require an hour or so of maintenance per week. Vinegar does not effectively clean the evaporation grid, as the manual states. You have to soak the grid in a very mild bleach solution every week or so, or slime starts building up. The other parts of the unit (that get wet) also need extra cleaning every few weeks.
On the upside, this humidifier does an excellent job putting water into the air, and that is the bottom line for a humidifier! The fan is noisy on high speed though. The best feature of this unit is that it costs almost nothing to operate. I do recommend buying an additional evaporation grid from Hunter, the price is very reasonable and well worth it. The base and grid frame are dishwasher safe, a nice feature.
If you're willing to spend the time doing routine cleaning, there's a lot to like about this humidifier. Have owned mine for 2.5 years now and was happy (and bored) enough to write this!

Very loud and leaks!
I thought this was going to be great! From the start it was loud....but many are. As time went on it got louder and as another reviewer said it sounds like the fans are hitting something. If its not completely level it leaks ... we had stains on the ceiling underneath this unit. If you are going to spend the money buy the Slant Fin UV humidifier and get your money's worth!

Nice concept humidifier...
I have owned this humidifier for over a year. It does a lot of things really well and have only a few complaints about this humidifier. First of all, let's talk about speeds. There is a low and high speed on this humidifier. The low is fairly low and you can hear the water trickling down the metal filters. Its a somewhat pleasant noise in fact. High is very high and powerful and makes a fair amount of noise. The noise is not disturbing to me and in fact, helped to drown out a lot of background noise so I can sleep peacefully. I could hear dogs barking, kids screaming through the neighborhood, but this humidifier is loud enough so I could barely hear the annoyances and sleep. If you live in a quiet area, you may then find it disturbing if you aren't used to it.

Next, the maintenance. This is where we run into some problems. The metal non disposable filters recommend you soak them in vinegar to remove mineral deposits that form. There is an antimicrobial coating on these filters to help inhibit growth of harmful bacteria and suggest that running these through the dishwasher will ruin the antimicrobial protection. Well, I've owned this for over a year, and there was so much hard water deposits on these filters that they were ineffective. I had to run it through the dishwasher to clean them up. The vinegar did nothing to help remove these things. It is also nice that the base is dishwasher safe, but after extended use, it is clear that brown algae like material was forming all over the inside of the unit as well, by the motor. This can't be healthy to breathe in, but you can't run that portion through the dishwasher. Also, the venting that brings in the are was getting filthy and some deposits were forming there as well. I've had to take the unit apart as much as possible, and put the plastic pieces I've unscrewed into the dishwasher as well to get the unit somewhat clean again. The areas around the motor are very difficult to clean and I end up using a thin brillo pad to try to wipe off the brown slimy scum that forms. I even take off the outgoing vent cover so I can wipe the fan blades. This unit is not easy to clean at all, but it works better then most other humidifiers I've bought before.

An improvement in design would be to perhaps blow air into the unit with the fan, rather then sucking moist air out with the fan. When you are sucking the moist air out of the system, more moving parts seem to get wet and slimy. I'm looking into the Venta Airwasher system which does this, but its very expensive.

The humidistat works well, but the refill light is on too often now. Some water has somehow gotten into the float that triggers the light. I'm not sure how to get the water out of the float.

This unit IS effective, but you have to keep it clean.

Worked fine for a while, but then went crazy.
I originally purchased the Hunter humidifier based upon internet reviews.It certainly worked in the beginning to humidify the room quickly.The problem is that the unit is pretty noisy when new, and became awful as time progressed.It's worth noting that I can sleep through almost anything, living in noisy New York City as I do.As such, I returned the unit and got a Hamilton Beach instead.I think that it is the better, and quieter, humidifier.

Great product -Poor Design
We purchased this humidifier and within 7 days, it was returned. The fans blades kept hitting on something inside the fan housing and on closer inspection, they have placed part of the electrical connection inside the housing and secured it with a plastic tighener - bad idea. The clicking sound drove me nuts.It sounded like the cards you would place on the rear tire of your bike when you were a kid.I have contacted Hunter about this problem and hope that they rectify it.The product works great and except for the noise, performed very well. ... It works as promised
After reading reviews everywhere (including the very negative reviews on Consumers Report magazine), and after looking for something portable to clean the air from dust and pet dander, I decided to give this product a try (after all it has a 60 days refund guarantee).

I was surprised to see results after few hours (4-5 hrs). I purchased one big unit for our kitchen and great room (approx 600 sqf) and compact units for each bedroom (approx 200 sqf). I was having allergic reactions to pet dander and it went away after few hours. It also helps with cooking odors (slowly b/c it has no fan to move masses of air quickly).

I found the product delivers on the promise, and it is the first time I found a review from Consumers report not to be accurate or maybe it is accurate but tested for different purposes that my specific needs with regards to allergies, dust and mild odors.

It is not a fan, and it works slow, so it is not for getting rid of odors in a matter of 5 minutes, but it keeps the air clean, traps a lot of dust and it is more energy freindly than installing HEPA filters on my A/C-heather system, and more effective than opening the windows to get rid of cooking odors(when it is winter and very cold outside :-))

It does generate a "funny" odor that some people might find not pleasant (but anyway you have the return guarantee). It is tested as low ozone emission which is good, but worthwhile to investigate more on that matter as ozone can be very toxic.

They will offer you as a giveaway either the small unit for bathrooms or the compact car unit... choose the bathroom unit instead, the car unit simply does not work as it moves very small quantities of air and unless your commute is 90 minutes, you are never that much time in your car to notice the effects of such a small unit. ... Great Job
I bought it yeterday. We do lots of Indian cooking with lots of smoke. This guy has significantly reduced the smoke and odor.

Excellent for the kitchen
This product is excellent in the kitchen. We cook a lot of indian food and this product is a 'match made in heaven' for this type of odor-intensive cooking. nowadays, we even fry fish and this takes care of all the odor. Havent had to replace filter until now. It would have been great if Hamilton bundled a free filter along with the machine.

I bought one to counter the stench of the litter box used by 2 cats.The purifier was a miracle worker for the first week operating on "whisper mode", so I bought a second one for my office, since my dog comes to work every day and adds his smell to the place.After the first week, the one by the cat litter box stopped being effective.I opened it and it was pretty choked with dust, so i cleaned it out as best as I could and put it back.It doesn't seem to work like it did the first few days any more.I could try replacing the filter, but the cost would add up quick if I have to replace them once a week!Yikes!I'd have to say it worked so great to start with that I'll stick it out a while longer, but overall it hasn't lived up to its full billing.In terms of "whisper mode", the sound level of the fan is less than an window A/C, but more than a computer fan...

This product works great
ok - here goes.We moved apartments,and our new apt has one of those exhausts which are under a microwave mounted over the stove.
So the odours when cooking on the front parts of the range enter the room!Yuck! (And this apt complex is a fancy one :( )
Plus - we cook a lot of Indian ,Italian food,and bake stuff.
So - its an odor fest - yuck!!I was not sure,reading some of these reviews,but I bought one ($20 - what did I have to lose)
and I have a elec. socket right next to the cooking range.

Wow! Odors clear up really well - the odors have been cut by 75% (and that's a lot when making sauces and curries)
then,after cooking (we set it to quick clean during cooking),and clean up is done,we keep it all night / all day,on whisper clean ,and the next day-all odors gone!
I loved it ,and bought 2 more for some more rooms of my apt
I guess the trick is to keep it close to the source of odors
it's compact,works wonderfully,and easy to clean/replace filters,and cheap!

Seems small, but it's really effective
We have two.One of them runs in the bathroom all the time, and works well to eliminate the musty odor.The other is in the kitchen and while it's running all the time, it's a bit more negligable because there's a lot of air circulation.Best to keep it in a smaller area, or very close to the souce of the odor.I still find that an open bowl of arm & hammer works the best...go figure.But you should see the dust they collect...convinces me that they're doing something good.I recomend. ...
