4-0 out of 5 stars Works well but very noisy!
This air purifier works very well to eliminate dust, polllen, etc. from the room. The auto detector kicks it into higher speeds when impurities are discovered -- very cool!It is extremely loud, however. It is essesntially a three-speed fan and its noise level is comparable to a medium-sized fan.We turn it off at night because it's in our master bedroom and keeps us awake a night.I'm pretty sure mose machines like this will create a similar noise level, so I still give it a high score.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with my purchase of 2
I recently had to deal with my son's allergies becoming so bad that he was close to having pneumonia due to a variety of factors, which included some animal dander. As part of the process for ridding the house of all possible airborne allergens, I purchased 2 of these air purifiers and couldn't be happier with them.I've read some reviews indicating that the units are noisy, but unless they are cycling on high in order to clean the air faster after detecting particles in the air, the noise hasn't been a factor for me.My son now feels "back to normal" after two weeks of serious medical intervention.I chose the unit because of the UV light to help kill bacteria in the air and the filtration system.I would (and have) recommended this product to anyone who suffers from airborne allergens. The price here is about half of what it is at major retailers, which helps as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purifier
I got in on this unit when it was 99.99.I deliberately chose a 350 sq ft model for my small room so i could leave it on whisper. The model gives off a somewhat loud fan noise. It isn't that quiet, but it's considered WHITE noise.I am a very light whisper (I wake up when my phone is on vibrate) and I sleep even better with it on as it blocks other noises. As for it's purifying ability, it's great.I have asthma and when i went home during the weekends, my asthma used to always act up during the night.ALL WENT AWAY when I got this baby.I breathe really easily now, especially at night in my room.I can't believe I lived so long without this thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very effective, and NOT noisy
Compared to other air purifiers we've used the Hamilton Beach is very effective, and NOT noisy -- at least on low speed. We have two (one for each bedroom in an 900 sq. ft. apartment), and keep them on low speed overnight just to mask other noises (primarily neighbors and street traffic). It's a soothing white noise, not high pitched at all.I'm not sure if some of these other reviewers got bad units or if they're just sensitive to noise in general.

We had a real dust problem in the apartment until we got these units. Now we sleep much better, and no longer wake up every morning with dry itchy throats.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars great, but geesh. LOUD.
On the "whisper" mode, it is still extremely loud. On the highest mode, it's so loud it is hilarious, but is only meant as "quick clean". If you've cooked something that smells horrible, maybe? I've noticed a difference in air quality for the better. ... Read more

  • Fast, accurate digital thermometer for gauging waking temperature
  • Helps identify ovulation times for help with conception or contraception
  • Continual beep when used correctly; signal when done
  • 1-minute temperature readout; auto-memory displays last-recorded temp

Reviews (22)

4-0 out of 5 stars Clearly showed ovulation, but question accuracy of temps
Charting the temperatures taken by this thermometer clearly showed me which day I ovulated. It was also clear which day my next cycle would start because of the drop in temperature.I'm not sure how accurate the individual temperatures are though.Every sample BBT chart I am able to find, including the one that comes with the thermometer, has 96.9 as the lowest possible temperature. My pre-ovulation temp was usually lower than that (96.2 - 96.6).The instructions state that you should have three consecutive hours of sleep before taking your waking temperature and I rarely sleep that well.Perhaps this is the cause of my low temperatures.I've also read that basal thermometers should measure hundredths and this one only measures tenths. At any rate, my cycle has a clear trend so the themometer does its job.

When you turn on the thermometer, a light comes on and the previous temperature that was taken and stored in memory is displayed. The light then goes off and you can take your temperature. The thermometer beeps while measuring your temp.It usually beeps about ten to fifteen times for me and then a long beeping sound lets me know it is done.At this point, you can press the button, the light comes on and your temperature is displayed. The thermometer then turns off.It will automatically turn off later if you forget. The beeping does not wake my husband and since I take my temperature very early (around 4:30 AM when it is still dark), I find that the beeps help to keep me awake.

5-0 out of 5 stars i can't believe anyone would complain about the beeping!
if this beeping wakes your husband up or prevents you from falling back asleep i pray to god you don't have traffic going down your street in the morning!a passing car would make more noise than this thermometer!great buy, i've checked it against my glass thermometer and it's very accurate and fast.highly recomended.

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY Annoying Thermometer
This thermometer drives me & my husband crazy! It beeps constantly while it's taking the temperature, concluding with a series of rapid beeps. I miss my old thermometer that beeped only once at the end.

I usually wake up for the first time in the morning a couple of hours before our alarm goes off, and I take my temperature then. With our previous thermometer it was no big deal to do it that way, but this noisy thermometer wakes us both up and we have trouble falling back asleep afterwards.

Definitely avoid this thermometer if constant beeping noises bother you first thing in the morning!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great little tool
I bought this thermometer about a month ago and have been using it to take my basal body temperature every morning. I think it is a wonderful product. Although some reviews said the beep was annoying, I think it is actually a very important feature. It beeps to let you know it is placed correctly. I sure like the peace of mind when I hear that. The display is lit and very easy to read.

I can not believe that someone said she had to run into bathroom to check her temp, because she did not want to wake her husband. Come on! The beep is not loud at all. And..didn't she know that basal temp should be taken the first thing in the morning without any unnecessary movements? I think husbands should actually help wives take basal temp by inserting the thermometre into their wives' mouths. This way, we can reduce our movements to minimum! My husband does this for me everyday!

One more suggestion for those who want to keep your latest result in the thermometre's memory for more than one reviewing. Whenever you turn on the thermometre to review the result, turn it off BEFORE the display begins to flash. After it flashes, it will become blank and ready for your next test. Your last temp will not be there any more. As long as you shut it off before it flashes, your latest result will always be there till you take your basal temp next time.

By the way, 1/10 degree F is precise enough for basal temp. Non-basal temp thermometres are 2/10. 1/100 is not necessary at all since on basal temp chart, we only record like 97.6, 98.2...

Hope this helps. I like this thermometre very much. Hope you will like it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had 2 and LOVE them
If you are going to chart, you NEED a reliable basal body therm. This one is my personal favorite. I like how it beeps to let me know it is in the right place and when it is done.
Those who prefer to drift back to sleep after temping or have a hubby who sleeps lightly may not like it as well though ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Caution: contains Blue#1
On commercials for cold medicine, at the doctor's, at the pharmacy -- they always say in a deep authorative voice: "...when you have a COLD be SURE to drink LOTS of LIQUIDS!"

To be graphic for a moment, if you have a cold (or the flu), and get dehydrated, mucus is like glue. It is hard to cough up glue! "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!" keeps all the crud fluid and moving. Wow! It is just like rocket science! :-) (Or maybe Math!!! Wow!!)

Guaifenesin helps the "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!" out. (But you still need the liquids!!) Guaifenesin is the active ingredient in cough syrup, Robetussin, Niquil, Humibid and this drug, Mucinex.

This pill makes getting Guaifenesin easy: One pill every 12 hours -- compared to two spoons of cough syrup every 4-6 hours. (With LOTS of LIQUIDS!!)

Also good news! In my price comparisons, Mucinex has been cheaper than an equal dosages of even the store-brand cough syrup. In my shopping, it has not been cheaper than generic, fast-acting guaifenesin tablets or Humibid tho'.

One major caveat for the allergy-prone among us, Muxinex contains Blue #1 -- a dye. Blue #1 is probably still better for you than cough syrup -- A.K.A. red-dye-laced sugar syrup. (YUM!!!) But! Blue #1 is an useless addition to an essential medicine. Who cares if the pills are blue?

I use 400MG Humibid caplets. It is dye-free and vanilla-flavored. It is about the same price -- or a little cheaper than this medication -- depending on the size of the bottle and whether you need to take it every day (a 100 count bottle good) or just when you have a cold (50 tablets plenty!). The over-the-counter version of Humibid is not "long acting" -- but it is easy for me to pack 1 tablet for a lunch-time dose if I am wheezed up that bad.

Two questions:

#1 How much is "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!"? For an adult, that is about 8 ounces every hour. Good choices are water, soup, or juice. You can also drink caffeine-free soda or sports drinks -- I don't need that much sugar. Fruits work too: applesauce, melons, grapes are all good sources of moisture. I have found it is good to, once an hour, imagine myself in a desert... for days... and then chug-a-lug a glass of water. It is amazing how good the water tastes!

#2 How do I know all this? I have asthma. It is exacerbated by colds or the flu. I ended up in the hospital w/pneumonia when I was 24 because I didn't drink "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!" Duh!! One of my more bright and shining moments! :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to get!
I have been using Mucinex brand Guaifensin for several months now, with amazing results for my fibromyalgia. Just when I thought nothing would work, Mucinex has "Got me off my back" - I feel like I am getting my life back. This is a great price - but couldn't we have it in the 100 tablet size? I have been buying it elsewhere - so I know it's available. BTW - Amazon's price is the best price I have seen anywhere! (Please don't raise it)

5-0 out of 5 stars Guifenesin for Fibromyalgia
After using guifenesin for almost a year and a half, my fibromyalgia symptoms are amazingly improved. But you definitely need to follow the protocol correctly or you will be wasting your money. You need the book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia Fatigue" because it gives the necessary directions.
Links are not allowed by Amazon in reviews, but if you do a google search for Dr. St Amand's "fibromyalgia treatment center", you will find all the information you need along with a support group that is crowded with people who are finding help using guifeneson.

I use the Extended-Release because it is working and I don't want to lose time trying the other kinds, but if you are just beginning, a lot of people are being helped by the fast acting guifeneson.

As for me, I will buy guaifenesin and do without other things in order to continue getting my life back from this life sapping condition!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mucinex OK, good Amazon price, bad deal all around
I have chronic sinus problems, and have recently been diagnosed with the early stages of emphysema at the tender age of 25.Yikes.I frequently took LA Guaifenesin tablets 1200mg and better for lung/sinus congestion and find that for thinning my thick junk, accept no substitutes. Then, the advent of the OTC guaifenesin.Nobody in my town carries it regularly, there's only one variety of extended release available on the market, and my health insurance does not cover OTC medications (I could get a month of Guaifenesin LA for < $5.00 USD.)I'm glad someone stepped up to the plate and made an OTC guaifenesin so that people could have access to it, and it's a good formulation, but all in all Mucinex is just another symptom of the patent abuse common in pharmaceuticals. They didn't reinvent the wheel, and there were people already manufacturing it in extended-release form in over-the-counter strength, yet now we have to wait a few years before there will be an affordable long-acting OTC.I got sick of it and bought half a kilogram of pharmaceutical grade Guaifenesin for about $42 shipped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works but expensive
Although this product seems really effective for treatment of Fibromyalgia, the 40 count bottle makes guaifenesin expensive.I prefer the 400 mg capsules that cost only one third as much; try Google for it or look for the guaifenesin 100 count bottles--it is more affordable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!
I've been using two of these and the larger one in my bedroom, home office and livingroom for about a week now. The change in me and my son's allergy problems is just short of miraculous! The whisper quiet is just fine -- in fact, I think the sound helps lull me into deep sleep. My allergy problems haven't totally disappeared, but they are sooo much better and my son's have totally disappeared. The cat gets to stay! :-))

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work out of the box
I just got this unit today, April 7th, 2005, and was pretty excited about it since i have ashthma.Anyway, it worked for a few hours. At that time, everything was nice and all.The unit isn't bad looking and worked impressively for a good price. However, then i opened the grill to test out the filter detector and the unit turns off as expected. However, the unit refused to turn back on after the grill was replaced...I referred to the manual and made sure everything was set up correctly and it was.Poor quality control.. stay away from this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this thing!
For as long as I can remember, I've coughed myself to sleep; my allergies act up primarily when I'm lying down, and I haven't found any allergy medication I can really tolerate.I figured I'd give this a shot, although I had no experience with air purifiers before.

The morning after the first night I used it I realized that I had not coughed at all while going to sleep.I no longer cough when I lie down; also I have a fan that I run frequently that used to get caked with dust, and I noticed now that there's almost no dust at all on the blades.I have two cats, and this apartment also seems to collect dust, and I can say for sure that this product has been EXTREMELY helpful.

It is never completely silent; on the lowest setting there' s sort of a "white noise" effect. It took me a couple nights to get used to it; I don't notice it at all anymore. However, at the highest setting it is noisy; but I have it running on automatic and it almost never goes into the highest setting. One thing I thought was funny at first, is that the sensor is so accurate that I can be standing in the bathroom, using some hair spray, and the purifier (located in the living room) will immediately kick into high gear.If you want to be sure that you're not awakened in the middle of the night, I wouldn't suggest leaving it on automatic, since there is the off chance that it could kick into high and the noise might wake you up.

There is a very slight breeze that comes from the front grill; however, this is not a problem for me because I do not have itpositioned so it is facing me directly.

All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this product, and it is much better than I expected for the price I paid.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought based on reviews
The main reason I got the cleaner was to help clean up the odors in my one bedroom apt. Well, it doesn't seem it does that particularly well, as after leaving it running full blast in my living room over night, I could still detect some of the odor from what I had cooked the night before.

I also got the unit to help me a little with the dust and pollen when spring rolls around, I haven't had much of a chance to test that just yet as I've had it for only a short while, but that seems to be what everyone commends it on, so perhaps it does that particularly well.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK.But do your research first.
Got this for a good price (discount coupon). Also own an IQAir which costs more than three times, so shouldn't really compare them.

- A lot of Features for a really good price (UV light, Active carbon odor-eliminating prefilter for under $170.). Big bangs for the bucks!
- True HEPA filter!
- You can place it on the side of the room against a wall and still have the unit work effectively.
- Really like the active air quality monitoring sensor (which shows you the current air quality in realtime).
- Clean a lot more air than the expensive Ionic Breeze for a fraction of the price - please do yourself a favor and do a research on the net.

- Somewhat NOISY for its rated cleaning air flow.
- Huge in size for its rated cleaning capability (don't be fooled by the tiny picture).
- Although my wife did not complain about the noise at night, she hated the constant cold breeze reaching her face while sleeping, no matter which location or how we positioned the air cleaner. So, I swapped it with the "breeze-less" IQAir for the bed room.

The smaller clean air outlet(actually nozzle) of this Hamilton Beach air purifier causes higher airspeed and noice level even at the lowest speed setting. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The convenience factor
This product works, yes, but why shouldn't it?Increase your daily vitamin intake and pop a couple echinacea, and it's the same thing. It isn't a miracle.I suppose the allure of this product is simply the convenience of having all the vitamins/herbs in one tablet, rather than taking a couple pills every day.The best thing you can do for a cold is to take your daily vitamins, get plenty of rest, and drink gallons of water. You'll get the same results as taking Airborne.

1-0 out of 5 stars TAKE A MULTIVITAMIN
This is such a gimick.Take a multivitamin and drink some OJ.This is no more effective than these tried and true old fashioned methods.Read the ingredients label before buying!I wish I had!

5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Works!
My family and I usually spend all winter and part of fall and spring with colds. A friend recommended this to me and I figured, what the heck, I have tried everything else. This has been the best winter we have had. As soon as we feel or see signs of a cold, we start taking the Airbourne. And we feel a boost of energy almost immediatley. Is all natural and safe for the kids. They like the gummies, which are alot easier to get into them than medicine. I highly recommend this product if you are tired of getting colds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cuttin' my colds down to size
After hearing Howard Stern promote this product during breaks on his morning radio show, I decided to give Airborne a shot after I felt the early effects of a head cold comin' on. Now when I get head cold, it usually migrates down and becomes a chest cold, and can take up to two weeks for me to get over. However, when I used this product on my latest cold, I got over it in about five days, and the symptoms weren't quite as severe as they'd usually get.

The second and third times I used Airborne were for sore throats, which are almost always harbingers to a two-week-long case of bronchitis. This time 'round, each sore throat lasted a mere four days, and neither ever went beyond the point of being just mildly uncomfortable.

Needless to say, I've become a believer of this product's cold-reducing capabilities. The only thing that might be a turn-off is its price; one tube of ten Alka-Seltzer type tablets runs about seven to eight smackers in most retail stores. Fortunately, the Airborne folks presently offer a little incentive: buy six tubes, get one free through the mail (you'll need the UPCs from the tubes' packaging). Yay, I'm halfway there...

BTW I recommend the orange-citrus flavor over lemon-lime; I found the latter flavor kinda nasty...

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe a placebo but it works for me
I've seen a few posts that wonder about the true medical powers of Airborne. All I can say, it works for me. There have been several times when I've felt run down, or that wierd, I can feel a cold coming on in the back of my throat feeling. I've taken a few Airborne over the day, though, and I don't get sick.

A few people have mentioned the taste, I think it tastes fine, kind of like Tang mixed with alka Seltzer maybe?

Bottom line, what have you got to lose? Compared to a lot of other things out there, all of the ingredients seem relatively safe for the small doses you're taken here, so why not try it? ... Read more

This top-of-the-line Cool Mist humidifier is a big step up from those old steam-spitting devices. It features a front LCD panel from which you can select the desired humidity. Simply adjust the setting to anywhere between 20 percent and 90 percent (50 percent is recommended for most situations) and set the fan to low, medium, or high. The unit is oval in shape, and because the controls are on one end, it can be operated easily even if placed in a narrow space. (It's 10 inches wide and about 17 inches deep.) The curvy, translucent gray rear tank lifts off easily for refilling, as does the front fan unit for changing or rinsing the drop-in filter. The water tank is dishwasher-safe. --Richard Farr ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Humidifier I've Ever Owned!!!
This is absolutely the best humidifier I've ever owned. It doesn't leave the floor and walls wet!I live in Alabama and in the winter, I usually have to refill it every to every day.In the summer it can be extremely humid here so it rarely runs.I read in one review where it was hard to refill the tank in the tub since you have to turn the tank upside down to refill it, but I've never had a problem refilling the tank.I love the fact that you can put the tank in the dishwasher. As far as the sound, I usually have mine set on the lowest speed which is quiet. On the highest speed, it's about as loud as having an osculating fan going in your room. Some people might like itbecause it drowns out all white noise. All I can say is....My skin isn't dry anymore..My sinuses are open and my lips are no longer chapped!!!!!!I would highly recommend the TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier to anyone!!!!Did I mention this humidifier was suppose to be for my daughter but after using it in my bedroom, I decided I needed it more.I'm going to be purchasing another one for my daugther's room!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice unit at any price
This is an excellent humidifier, especially for the price. It's very quiet. A filter typically lasts almost an entire season here in dry Arizona (usually October til April or whenever we turn the swamp cooler back on). It keeps our 3 back bedrooms humidified nicely just as long as you don't open the windows of course. I only fill it up every other day at most during driest times (outside humidity = 9% today!)
The only reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is that the humidistat failed after 3 years of use. From my experience with these types of units 3 years is pretty good service and at this price it's really fantastic. I'm about to purchase another one...

5-0 out of 5 stars very good unit
I did a lot of research before deciding on this particular humidifier, and I am glad we got the one we did. It is very quiet, it seems to be made very well, and is relatively sturdy. When the weather gets dry, our entire house is way too dry. Skin, furniture, houseplants...I talked my husband into trying this humidifier, and have to recommend it highly. I'd buy another just like it if I had use for another one, but this pretty much does the whole house. Hamilton Beach is still a good name.

4-0 out of 5 stars Convenient and effective!
I bought two different humidifiers- a Slant/Fin warm mist and this True Air.Although we really like our Slant/Fin for the baby's room, this unit is much easier to clean. It is rather noisy when the water tray is filling (it makes a glugging sound that sounds like someone knocking on your window in the middle of the night- spooky!), but for ease of use and maintenance, it can't be beat. The noise factor is less when you put it in "quiet" mode and after a dy or so, you just get used to it.We have VERY hard water and the filters don't need to be changed as often as with most humidifiers which is a long-run cost savings.I recommend this item and have done the research- replacment filters are cheapest through Amazon (cheaper than at the manufacturers website).

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Great! Just what I wanted...
After reading all the mixed reviews on this product, I bought it anyway as it seemed the best deal for the amount of space I needed to humidify (1100- 1200 sf).I was pregnant and it was winter and I was getting pretty dehydrated from the drying heat in my apartment.Within days I was sleeping soundly waking refreshed and no longer having headaches.I would have given this 5 stars but it's the first I bought and I cannot make any comparisons.

I am not sure what the reviewers that reviewed this product badly expected, having to refill it often just means that it is putting a lot of moisture into the air, the noise is not overwhelming and is similar to any white noise often used to put and keep kids asleep, I had no problem refilling it, my 2 year-old even liked to help, finally if you turn the filters faithfully once a week 2-3 filters should last the season.

1-0 out of 5 stars DANGER DANGER
I recently purchased the Ionic Pro.
After I purchased it, I wanted to know more about the product and how it cleans the air.
After searching the internet, consumer reports and other sources indicate that any Ionic air purifiers do more bad than good.
It releases "ozone" into the air, which is bad for your lungs.
And consumer reports says it does a very poor job cleaning the air. Yes, it is quiet and don't need to puchase any filters, but I don't think its worth the risk.
I have a 7 month old son.
After I found out about this, I decided to return it and puchase one of the HEPA air filters.

For more info, click on the link from consumer reports

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful purchase!
After reading some of the previous reviews I was skeptical.I needed an air purifier in my bedroom because I have two cats, people smoke in the room, and it generally has a musty smell.

I bought an Ionic Pro a few weeks after reading these reviews.I'm impressed!

After the first night I had to clean the blades because there was so much junk in the air.The next cleaning was about a week later because the machine had already powered through most of the offenders before (the instructions even state that it cleaning periods will be farther apart after the first use due to the fact that the air is generally cleaner and many of the pollutants have already been disposed of).

Some of these reviews talk about taking it from room to room... it doesn't work that way. This item is designed for small, medium, or large rooms (rooms closed off by four walls and closed doors) and not huge open spaces or outside. It's worked perfectly in my large bedroom and I still haven't heard a sound from it after a month of constant use.

The best thing to do is to purchase it for use in one room (don't take it from the kitchen to the living room to the bathroom, etc.) because it still takes time to clean the air. It's not an air freshener and does not make the air smell like citrus pleasentness. It simply cleans the air making it smell cleaner, feel less thick, and reduces the ammount of dust in the room (this I can vouch for).

If you're looking for a quick air freshener buy a glade plug-in.If you're looking for a long term air purifier this is a very good buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy! Here's why!
I bought this and then did my research. I know; that was dumb. Let me share what I found out and what led me to return the product. 1) This does not do much to clean the air. Consumer Reports did a study and found out that there is not enough air circulation produced by this gadget to clean the air. Sure, it will grab some of the dust floating around but so will fly paper. 2) This emits ozone and ozone can be dangerous to anyone with lung problems. This unit is made in China. Do you really want to trust that a foreign made product is going to be made so well that ozone levels will not exceed what is healthy? I don't. Sharper Image sells a gazillion of these - but you should check out what consumer reports says before you go for one of these.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works, but ...
I bought two of these. I live near a heavy traffic street, and it gets filled with black particles every three of four days, and I believe my allergies and my son's are getting better.

The problems:

1. The power light is so bright that you do not need a night lamp to read.
2. Good thing is that the power light stopped working after two days, I had to put some black tape on the other unit to have a dark room for sleeping.
3. One of the two units I bought makes and extremely loud noise. I tried to change the blades from the other, but the problem seems to be in the unit and not the blades. Being outside the U.S., bad luck for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!
I fail to understand ANY of the positive reviews of this item since it so obviously doesn't work. I've been running it now for several months in a very dusty house (with 3 dogs, no less) and it hasn't removed enough dust to bother with-certainly no where near what the manufacture claims. And given the cost of the unit, hardly justifiable.
It's just another attempt of corporate America (or maybe China,I don't know) inventing any gimmick to relieve consumers of their hard-earned cash.
You're far better off buying one of the $20 fan-driven units that have been around for years. In spite of the drawbacks to these units, they do work.
If you're in the market for a tall, black, ugly, object that takes up space in your living room, by all means buy this!
So one more time: IT DOESN'T WORK! IT'S A PIECE-OF-CRAP! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic thermometer, lasted for years of daily temping.
I've been using this thermometer for years for charting purposes and for my two children. It's lasted (on the initial battery) since December 2000 until now (February 2004) with daily temp checks for charting. The continuous beep while temping let's you know that it is working, but it's not too loud to wake a sleeping spouse next to you (or a very tired/feverish child). My 8 year old like to be able to take and read his own temperature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun way to measure the heat!
Okay, I confess. I take my temperature often for no reason because I like to hear it beep while in my mouth and then see I am a normal 98.6 degrees a living healthy person.

Oh, yeah, the other great thing about the beeping thermometer is that if you are sick and taking your temperature everybody knows it from the sound of the beeping and you get instant sympathy.

This thermometer is very easy and simple to use just press a button for the digital display to come up and stick it in your mouth. Once in your mouth it will begin beeping and give a long beep to indicate it has finished. Remove and check the display for temperature.

The memory will hold the last temperature taken if you need to reference that number.

Get well soon or have fun checking,

The thermometer came just in time for our little one to come down with a fever. Taking a squirmy temp is no fun, but when we told her to be still and listen for the ""beeps,"" she quieted right down and laughed when it was ""all done."" Now both little ones ask if they need their ""beep-beep."" The thermometer was fast and accurate and the beep lets you know it's working properly. Great thermometer and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

I really liked this product. It just so happens my son was sick and we really put it to use! I'd recommend purchasing one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This thermometer has a lot going for it. ...
This thermometer has a lot going for it. It's unbreakable -- definitely a big plus! You don't have to shake it down, which some people have problems with (especially older people with less flexible wrists). And the beeping lets you know that it's working properly and when it's done. My only complaint is that it reads out only in Fahrenheit -- I take a thermometer when I travel and telling a pharmacist your temperature anywhere else needs to be done in Centigrade. (In fairness, most glass thermometers don't read out in both either.) ... Read more

Editorial Review

When babies have respiratory or nasal congestion, vaporizerscan help alleviate discomfort by adding soothing moisture into the dryindoor air of a bedroom. This vaporizer's 2-gallon capacity allows itto produce steam for approximately 24 to 32 hours. (It automaticallystops producing steam when the water level goes below .75 inch.) Atester found that the steam was sluggish until a few pinches of saltwere added to the water (a trick suggested by the manufacturer). Theelectrical heating unit detaches from the water holder, making cleanupeasy--an important daily chore for preventing mineral buildup andstains. Comes with a built-in nightlight and a small tray for holdingvaporizer medications.

Safety note: Once children can get out of bed on their own bedroomvaporizers can become hazardous, as they produce hot steam that cancause serious burns if the unit is knocked over. Be sure to keep cordand vaporizer far from baby's reach. --Hannah Reynolds ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A best buy
This vaporizer is easy to clean and effectively humidifies the air in my baby's standard size 10' x 10' bedroom. It is quiet and the nightlight is a great feature to help sleepy parents from bumping into it. However, I returned this 2-gallon version and purchased the 1.5-gallon version which was less wieldy and more than sufficed. But the 2-gallon vaporizer has a handle which was very convenient. The only con is having to soak the heating unit in vinegar each week to clean out hard water deposits. But vinegar is much cheaper than buying special filters required by other vaporizers to prevent bacteria from building up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best out there
this is the best humidifier/vaproizer on the market.I have used it for both my children and my self when we have colds and it is the best. You just need to make sure you put it where your childrend can get at it.You don't let them play near the stove do you?Why wouldn't you be careful with this?

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy a humidifier instead.
I bought this the first time my son had a cold.It doesn't work. The vaporizor is buy Vicks but uses Kaz inhalent, go figure.Even after buying the Kaz inhalent the thing barely puts of any steam and forget about smelling the inhalent.

We own the one just like this without the night light - I sent my 2 year old to her room.I had only been using it at night when she was in her crib - but since she was stuffy I started it early and forgot about it.I sent her to her room and she screamed....She had 2nd degree burns on her hand and we ended up in ER.I don't want anyone to go thru what we did....BUY A COOL AIR HUMIDIFER - Mine is going out in the trash & will be replaced with cool air. I could just imagine her spilling the water and being burned even worse.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our Dr. has recommended a cool humidifier as opposed to this warm air machine. The top of this humidifier gets VERY HOT and my little girl put her hand on it yesterday and got a 2nd degree burn. She screamed for an hour and her poor little hand is blistered. This humidifier is designed to sit on the floor of a room and it has a light on top of it so it is attractive to little ones--watch out!Shame on vicks for selling a product designed to be in the nursery that is this dangerous. It seems like a protective cover could have been added. Our Dr. said that a cool mist humidifier would provide the same benefits as this warm air one but there's no risk of your child getting burned.DO NOT BUY a warm air humidifier! ... Breathe and sleep easy with this super-quiet humidifier. This modelpurifies water and converts it into a soothing plume of vapor. The unit is shaped like a coffee maker, has a 10-by-6-inch footprint, andstands 1 foot tall. Clear blue plastic allows you to see how much waterremains in the 1.5-gallon, 20-hour tank. A variable control providesfine-tuning of mist output, and the dial on the lid allows you to direct the mist (away fromcurtains or bedding, for example). Even at a blast the sound is still barelyaudible. This tank lies flat for easy filling, butmight be a bit hard to reach into for cleaning. Still, the replaceablefilter strains impurities out of the water, leaving the air clean. Pop open the lid--on this cartridge you'll find a phone number for ordering replacements.--Trilby Cohen ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Throw away humidifier
The replacement filters aren't available which really is a problem. The machine is great when it is new but. . . The lack of a turn-off when empty is another thing that should be fixed but I can work around that. What can I do about the non-availability of filters?

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 Years and still going!!
We've been using the humidifier for 2 years now (on the same cartridge) and it's still going strong! This is our first humidifier so I don't have anything to compare it to, but my friend had one (don't know the brand) with a nightlight on it and it barely put out any moisture when her son had croup.I ran this one over and she fell in love with it and bought one the next day!Yes, there is a smell in the room after a night of being used with the door closed, but I just assumed it was from the dampness. All in all, I love my humidifier!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Just Fine
I have been through so many humidifiers trying to find a good one. This one did some of the stuff that others have complained about.I took all the flitering junk out of it and it works just fine... no stink...just a fine mist.I turn it on a somewhat low output as I am using it for one room only.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good cool mist but too much upkeep; doesn't turn itself off
Good output of cool mist, but daily upkeep, filter changes, is a pain. It gets stinky if you don't change the filter frequently. Also, the instructions say not to leave the unit running while empty--so why didn't the manufacturer make it shut off automatically, as other models do??? Overall, I prefer the Honeywell warm mist humidifiers with built in humidistat--easier to maintain, auto shut off.

2-0 out of 5 stars humidifier works well however the smell is awful
The humidifier works well, it's very quiet.I bought this last year and when I took it out this winter to use it, the smell was profoundly disgusting!I can't find a replacement filter either in case that's what is causing it.I can't use it with the awful smell. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wildly inaccurate
Varied from 10% above to 8% below actual humidity, as measured against several known accurate humdity guages. I returned it as useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars works decently
Don't breathe on this or get it close to moisture or else it'll screw up the readings for about 30 minutes. Also don't use the velcro strap as they don't stick very well, on either end. I tried to put it up on the wall and it fell off after an hour or so. Otherwise works great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine as far as I know
This seems to work as advertised.I bought a different brand and style in the same price range, and when I set the two next to each other I get almost the exact same readout for both temperature and humidity on each.So either it is accurate, or both are junk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This product might be worth $1.99 tops. But at $17.99 this is a piece of junk. It didn't even work out of the box. They say "buyer beware". But if you buy this product you have nobody to blame but yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably priced, simple thermometer/hygrometer
My physic teacher once said, you know exactly what temperature it is when you have one thermometer. But when there are two, you're never sure. The reason is because more often than not, the thermometers are a bit off from each other. This is not the case with Mr. Misty.I bought two and tested them for a week. The hygrometer and thermometer readings are consistent on both units. However, I did not test the accuracy of the readings. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars noisy companion
This unit does clean the air and is quite efficient at removing odors, but it is so noisy that it is a relief to unplug it and put it back in its box to return it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Makes a pitched whine
This is a completely unusable air filter. The unit, at all speeds, makes a very audible and distracting pitched noise. This is not at all suitable for any environment.

The unit moves very, very little air as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great air purifier for the price
-size, very compact
-can be placed horizontally or vertically to save space
-does a very good job of removing particles from the air
-ionizer removes odors
-price, try to find an air purifier/ionizer for under $40

-fully effective for rooms 110 square feet or smaller
-noise level (at low it is slightly noticable, on medium you have to turn up the tv a few notches, on high it sounds like a fan or air conditioner on full blast)

For the price, it does a terrific job in smaller rooms with the only drawback being the noise (which on low is very bearable).I leave it on high all day while I'm at work, switch to medium in the evening and low at night and it does the trick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take as soon as you start to feel sick!
Take one tablet every three hours as soon as you start to feel ill.Put the tablet into a little mug of water, let the tablet dissolved and then drink. The liquid will taste something like lemonade... it's not bad at all.

Twice this year I have used this product to ward off a bug and it absolutely works -- and works quickly!Usually by day two is when I feel perfectly normal and healthy.

And stock up because it sells out quickly in the store!

5-0 out of 5 stars Airborne is Awesome!
I was pretty skeptical about this product at first - but after trying it I discovered it actually works! You will need to take it when you first feel symptoms of a cold, and you may need to repeat a couple of times.I have successfully fended off several colds this season that normally last weeks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really and truly works to fight a cold!
I love this product! I honestly believe that it's helped me fight off several colds. As soon as you feel that scratchy throat, itchy eyes, or sniffly just plop one tablet into a cup of water, let fizz for a minute, then drink. Repeat every three hours or so until the symptoms go away. It tastes pretty good too; something like a lemon-lime selzer. I like this flavor better than the original orange, but that one is pretty good too.And I swear, the stuff works! I also really like Zicam, but prefer this effervescent formula over Zicam's nasal gel. Try this, and see why stores can't keep it on the shelves!

5-0 out of 5 stars This stuff is magic - honestly.
I can't believe some weird mix of herbal stuff and vitamins and can really fight off your cold so fast, but it does. It's really amazing. Take advantage of free shipping on orders over $25 and stock up because each tube has about 10 tablets and you are supposed to take one every three hours - so you will go through one of these pretty fast if you have to take it for a day or two. This stuff works miracles. And this is the flavor to get - tasty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver for teachers
I have used this product for over a year, and never got sick since!! Really works! 5-0 out of 5 stars These really help a sore throat
These gummies really work when you feel like you are getting sick and/or if you have a sore throat. The only flavor I cannot stand is the licorice, but you can easily identify the flavors via the picture on each gummi. In desperation I will even eat that flavor!

I can eat a whole package...(but try not to!) They really do fend off whatever is coming to attack you. (i.e. a cold) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wait a second...!
This is not so much a review as a cautionary note.

I've done a lot of research on filters and the such since my son tested positive for exposure to lead.

Both of the reviews of this filter (I have this or a similar Honeywell which is great but I am not sure which model.)Anyway, both of these reviews mention vacuuming the filter(s) to extend the useful life of the item.IF you are using a HEPA filtered vacuum, and only if you are using a HEPA filtered vacuum, should you think of this. But the cost of these filters is not so great that this makes much sense.

If you are not using a HEPA filtered vaccum, than all you are doing is sucking the stuff you don't want to breath out of the filter (which is what you bought the machine to do in the first place) and blowing it back into the air (which is what you boght the machine to prevent.)

Basically, the few bucks you save is not worth the risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars just as good as any other HEPA filter
HEPA filters were developed by the US Atomic energy commision to remove radio active particles from a contaminated environment. So they are more than sufficient for removing dust, mold spores, cockroach feces and dust mites which have been known to cause respiratory problems such as asthma.

Don't go by the light on the your Honeywell unit to tell when it's time to change the filter because the manufacturer wants you to change it as frequently as possible. When you find that the flow of air has slowed down and dust in the vicinity of the unit tends to collect more, then it's time to change the air filter. Also, vacuuming the outside of the filter may prolong the life. I vacuumed my HEPA and found that there was an increase in air flow afterwards and less dust collecting around the unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time to Change the HEPA Filter on Your Air Cleaner?
Before ordering a replacement HEPA filter for your Honeywell (or other brand) Air Cleaner, be sure to check the model number on the unit. This filter is for the smaller round unit (Model 10500) and for the smaller of the two upright units with handles (Model 17000). I replace my HEPA filter every year because I am very allergic to cigarette smoke, pollens, dust, molds, and other allergens and irritants. Also, this HEPA filter has pre-filters that wrap around it, so you may want to order a box of those, too. The pre-filters should be changed every 3 months, but I check them more often and vacuum off any accumulated pet hair. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rated Highest by Consumer Reports!
My wife and I bought two of these 18 months ago. They both run 24/7 with the exception of several hours down-time to clean the ionizer and pre-filter (hose-off - they're too big to fit but one inoizer in the dishwasher). One sits in our bedroom, and the other on our perpetually wet and moldy enclosed patio, just outside the cat door.

It is incredible the amount of matter (blue-lint, cat hair, dun-colored mold spores) collected in the pre-filter, alone.Running as often as these do, the one on the patio needs to be cleaned every two-four weeks, while the bedroom fouls in eight days. When the prefilter fouls, it bulgestowards the ionizer and eventually pulls out of its framing.

This filter gives me, a chronic allergy sufferer, and oasis of fresh air in the room where it operates.I would rate its cleaning ability as absolutley the best I've had in 20 years of trying to find an adequate machine.

Against the Honeywells we had, this uses relatively little power. And, despite what the other reviewer stated about the carbon filter, ours still work after 18 months!

The drawbacks I've found are minor, but I'll provide them here just as an FYI.

Cleaning is not fun.Yes, one just has to pull out the prefilter and ionizer, hose them down, and let them dry. However, one MUST EXERCISE CAUTION.First, the "blades" of the ionizer are VERY SHARP, particularly on the more numerous side, and I've suffered a score of deep, paper-cut like wounds on the tipof a finger or two.Second, the ionizer is VERY FRAGILE (aluminum alloy?) and *VERY* expensive. In cleaning, I dropped one from the height of maybe 12 inches. It landed on a corner and through the ionizer out of alignment. It cost $160 to replace.

Noise is an issue.Even on low speed, the fan/airflow is audible, though regular (Hey! it's the fan that gets the circulation going and gave this the clear advantage over the Shaper Image machine that CR actively recommends against, even in the face of a (succesfully defeated) lawsuit by SI!).When a portable radiator heater we have comes on, the drain in power tends to make the fan hum.I can ingore it, but it bothers my wife, if she's awake.Honestly, by putting the radiator a safe distance ahead of the cleaner, it augments the heater by circulating the heated air.Minor rattles can occur, too, so I keep a beach towel on top of the (large, 2-cubic foot?) unit, and several weighty books. This seems to have done the trick for more than a year.

Overall, I still say this is the best one can get, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkably cleaner air
I bought this pricey air purifier because it received the highest rating in a Consumer Reports field test. It may be expensive to purchase, but it's worth it. This model works by drawing air through a series of filters using a powerful 3-speed fan. A prefilter removes large particles/hairs, then an ionization chamber clumps the smaller particles, allowing them to be easily removed by the final stage carbon filter. This combination seems particularly effectively at removing dust, cat dander, pollen, and other odors. It also greatly reduces the odor of cigarette smoke that wafts into my apartment from a chain-smoking neighbor downstairs. The filter also proved effective at removing the odor of cat urine/feces near a litterbox.

Like all air purifiers, the big downside of using one is the energy cost and the cost of replacing the filters. Surprisingly, this unit users much less electricity than cheaper models and costs less to maintain since the filters are washable. Only the carbon filter needs to be changed every 3-6 months since it slowly loses its ability to absorb odor.

The ionization produced by the unit leaves a slight but noticable ozone smell when the unit is running. This may be irritating to some, but it actually smells pleasant to my wife and I since we know that the unit is working. The smell disappears in an hour or less after the unit's been turned off, even if it's been left on for a night.

I would highly recommend this air purifier. Since an air purifier needs to run almost constantly while one is home if "fresh" air is also coming in through an A/C or fan, it's important to pay more attention to the maintenance/electricity costs than the initial sticker shock. ... Read more
