5-0 out of 5 stars This is awesome
I'v had this unit for over a year now, and I must say it is well worth the money.
I don't want to go into its functions as many others have done that already. What I want to point out is that the pollen mode really helped me a great deal during allergy seasons.
Cleaning filter is a fairly easy and does save on cost.
I purchased my unit with an $100 rebate from Sharp. It took a little while to get the rebate but now I wish I had gotten another unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent air purifier (may be the best in its class)
I bought this unit about 5 months ago. Of course I did all kinds of research before buying it. Sharp's Canadian website has a ton of info. on this unit, it even has a rebate which, unfortunately, does not apply to US purchases.

I would elaborate more on features and why I liked this unit but you can read more about it through the reviews here as well as from Googling (try Sharp's Canadian website). Instead, I will share my after-5-month experience.

I've had to clean my filter once after 5 months of use. Cleaning is very easy, just pop open the cover, take out the filters, vacuum them then put them back in. Sharp reccommends buying new filters every 5 years. That's a huge cost saving versus what other air filters will cost down the road. I've left the unit on non-stop (usually in silent/auto mode) for the past 5 months without incident. Works like a charm. Quieting working in the background, kicking into higher gear as it detects impurities in the air. Put it near the main door of your house and you can tell how *clean* your guests are. Also, it seems to know the difference between a pungent smell and perfume/air fresheners. I sprayed the room near the unit with a citrus air freshener but the unit didn't show that the air was "unclean". However, put a pungent smell near it (trash, rotten food, etc.) and it will kick into high gear almost instantly.

With all this hoopla revolving around the vastly inferior Ionic Breeze, I'm surprised to see that there hasn't been a major US-based review on Sharp's Plasmacluster technology, or much talk about it. Is it hype? Does it not work? It seems to work for me and the other reviewers here.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!!!
I probably don't have to expand on the performance of this product. As you can read from other reviews, it does all the things it says it does and then some...
Besides being a good air cleaner, it's very well designed, simple and unobstrusive... it's beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT!!!
Is the only word I can think of for this unit!In "Silent" mode it REALLY is silent!I keep it on "Auto" in my bedroom and you can't even here it.Every now and then, the air quality goes to "slighty impure" and it kicks into gear and cleans the air.On "Max" it really moves the air!I love the fact that it has a "thick" carbon pre-filter instead of those "thin" sheet carbon filters. It'a all the features you'll ever need in a purifier.I highly recomend this unit

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical centres choice!
I pretty much bought this Plasma Purifier without hesitation for my new born baby nephew in Hong Kong, after hearing that some medical centres there have been using it as well. With the bad air pollution there and caring about the air he's going to be breathing in, I feel there is no better choice. Don't worry about changing the filter either, 5years is a very long time and putting one in is a breeze.

I suffer from hayfever, so any dust or pollen around tends to irrate me quite a bit during the summer. I personally have the much advertised Ionic breeze, and don't think it realy helps that much, although I still keep it on, hoping it's doing something! To be honest, unlike the Sharp, there is hardly any circulation to move air or dust particles around to be ionized. The Sharp is the obvious choice even for the price tag. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor quality service from Amazon
Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I ordered this item and it came out with the expired battery. I called Amazon, and they sent me a replacement quickly. The thing is that the replacement was in exactly the same *not working* condition. The same problem with the battery. I was suggested to shop somewhere else for this item, as Amazon vendor don't check the condition of the items before they ship them to customers. Be aware! Don't waste your time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Happy Customer!
I researched air purifiers for almost 2 months before finally buying this air purifier.I couldn't seem to decide what would be a good because reviews seemed to always go both ways on everything I looked at.I really think it just has a lot to do with what reason you are wanting your air purifier to work as to how happy you are going to be with it, and as to what type you need to buy.I mainly wanted one for my allergies.I am allergic to dust, dust mites and mold spores. There is no smokers in my house or anything so the air is clean from that.
I mainly chose this filter because I found a really good price for it somewhere else, and I decided to give it a try.I have to say, for what I need it to do, it does a great job.The air definitely feels fresher and my eyes do not burn and I do not sneeze near as much since getting this machine.I like that you only have to replace the HEPA filter every 1-2 years, where most HEPA filters I researched in other machines required every 6 months or so.They are not too expensive for lasting that long.
I have only run my machine 8 days and I took out the filter to see what it looked like, and there was a bunch of dust and stuff already collected on it.So I can tell it is getting a lot out of the air.I saw several people wrote that the machine is way too loud even on low, but I tested several machines out, and this is definitely the quiestest of the HEPA models I tried. At night in my room I have it on low and it is perfectly fine, about the same noise as a fan would be.Even on medium I can watch TV without problems. So if you are looking for a air purifier for your allergies at least, and have around 1,000 Sq. feet place or so your living it, it works great.Highly recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Honeywell - 3 times is a charm?
Good News:When the 17400 operates, it does a good job.
Bad News: Motor is defective.
I purchsed the Honeywell 17400 Envirocare in November 2003 and by June 2004 the unit cease to operate. As described here already, the unit simply would not turn on.Returned it to service center on my dime plus $10.00 check. After 5 weeks and no response, I complained aggressively to Customer Support who immediately dispatched a replacement unit. That new unit arrived in early August 2004 after 6 weeks without a unit. You can be sure that extreme care of the unit was observed at all times for fear that it would beakdown again. GUESS WHAT?The new (replacement) unit stopped working on October 8.The next unit (number 3) arrived in 7 days after my plaintiff telephone call to customer service. Still, after the new unit arrive, I had to return the bad unit to Honeywell again on my dime!Maybe three times a charm? Please, please whatever you do (unless Amazon starts giving them away) do not get this unit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible product - stay away!!
This unit only worked for about 6 weeks, then wouldn't turn on anymore. I'm very disappointed - I paid near two hundred and was unable to return it...what a complete waste!! I would have given no stars if I could have!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this model. Honeywell screwed up!
I bought this air cleaner in March of 03 and was pleased with the thing until it just stopped working in January 04.There was no indication that anything was amiss, I was changing the pre-filters on the recommended schedule and then one morning nothing; no lights, no sound, no activity.Am sending it back to Honeywell (on my nickel according to their warranty policy). We will see how long the replacement lasts.I have read several reviews here that don't give me much hope.Amazon was nice, said I needed to contact Honeywell directly but suggested I post a review.

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing is terrific!
I have a 100 year old house - by that I mean I have lots and lots of dust problems. I also have 3 cats, 3 hamsters and a guinea pig (as well as fish!) And I smoke, way too much. I got this air cleaner a week ago and the setup was terribly simple.

I leave it on the low setting because I found medium and high to be too loud, but low is working just fine in my 17x16 open room. (There's an open stairwell in the room.) This thing sucks my smoke towards it from 10 feet away, and I dusted the day I got it and haven't had to since, which is truly amazing for my house. I'm breathing better as well!

I highly recommend this product to everyone. In fact, I'm going to buy a couple of smaller Honeywell's for my bedroom and bathroom (cat litterbox in there.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the last humidifer I bought.
I use this to humidify an enclosed, closet sized, habitat for my Giant Green Iguana.I keep humidity in the upper part of the habitat at 60-70%.This thing operates continuously (cycling on and off) for months a time, probably over a year at this point.I do have to soak the water tray and element in vinegar once a week or even more often to keep the scale down, but I've also let it go for a month w/out de-scaling and it works fine also.

The only problem I've had with this unit is the lower, outer tray cracked or seperated somehow and I got water from condensation leaking out.Since my habitat is waterproof this isn't an issue, and despite the unit being under warranty I just used RTV sealant to fix the leak. The environment I'm using this in is sort of extreme duty so I wouldn't hold this against the unit (much).

I prefer this unit to others that have LCD displays. The display s go bad on me sometimes due to humidity, as do the push buttons. The rotary switches on this unit are reliable, and after some fiddling you can get whatever level of humidity you want.

If the one I have dies and the warranty expired I would probably buy another.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked well while it worked
The good
- Very quiet, at first (more on that later)

The bad
- Steam comes out at a low rate, even at the high setting
- Needs frequent cleaning due to scale, especially on difficult to clean heating element

The very ugly
- After 3 months of use has become very noisy, to the point that we are rarely using it.Quality control is not what it needs to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars does the job
This humidifier is great.I've had it about 6 months-I do have hard water, which makes it a pain to clean, but I don't do it very often and it works fine. The only thing is you can't clean the main part b/c it's hooked up to the electrical, and for me that has the most buildup. But it still works wonderfully and for the price I think it's a good buy.I use it almost every night, and on low fill it every 2 nights.

1-0 out of 5 stars lots of scale buildup
I live in the country and have mildly hard water, so I bought this humidifier under the assumption that it would work fine with regular cleanup. WRONG! If I want to use it, I have to do extensive cleanup every 12 hours. I even tried using a lime and scale deterrent additive, which didn't help at all. The humidifier may work okay if you don't have hard water, but I can't use it anymore.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Garbage
I'll make this short and sweet. I'd give this zero if I could. I bought two of these based on good reviews and Honeywell's good name. They both worked for less than a week before dying on me. Spend your money elsewere. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars My allergies win!
I purchased this unit during spring after realizing that the air quality (extremely high pollen count) in my new town is not compatible with my allergies.I chose this one because of the hepa filter in addition to the ion feature.I will say:I'm disappointed.I have tried running the unit overnight to wake up to clean air, but I sneeze an equal number of times as if it was turned off.It gives out a pleasant cool breeze, which is the only reason why I'm not returning it.It will come in handy during the hot Atlanta summer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loud? yes.Works?yes.
Ok this machine IS noisy, but certainly not annoying to any degree.Sounds like a fan, not a motor.I recently changed the filter and noticed that it had picked up a ton of airborne dirt and debri.I also feel less stuffy in the morning. So, I will happily accept the fan noise and highly recommend this unit! It's also rather inexpensive for what it can do.Overall, a sound investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars very happy!
my 1 year old has had allergies pretty much since he was born. poor baby. i have always felt so sorry for him, his eyes always watering and waking up with goopy eyes. and all that wonderful allergy stuff.
i pluged this in 4 days ago and yesterday i realized my sons eyes are clear and he hasnt been itching his face for a couple days!! i have noticed the air quality is better in my boys room than in the rest of the house. i wish i would have grabbed a couple of these when i got this one! (i got it at frys for $50)
exactly what i wanted, exactly what i needed!
i also want to note that when this is on low you can barely hear it, on medium setting (the suggested setting) it is not loud, but definitly audible, on high, it it quieter than a box fan on high. but i love the high setting for when my son is taking a nap, it helps him sleep better, i keep it on low during the day, high at night and during naps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Noisy!!
I was looking for a cheaper version to my Ionic Breeze Quadra...This is definitely not it. I can't believe how loud this was on low. I don't really see anything being pulled into it either when I kick up some dust. It's going back to the store today.

3-0 out of 5 stars Now it has three stars
This purifier is quiet on the lowest setting, but the cleaning rate will drop as well. Its loud on the highest setting and the medium setting is between loud and quiet depending how loud you want your TV to be. The dust problem in my room seems to have slowed down a bit, but not much since I run this on the low setting during the time I'm in my bedroom. I only use the high setting when I'm out of my room or when I'm sleeping. So far I've been running this purifier since 1-9-05 and it hasn't had any problems with the motor or anything. Also the ionizer will charge you with static electricity if its blowing directly on you. So touching anything metal will give you a shock.

Update:
My LEDS just went out. I unplugged it to move to another outlet (which had been used before) and now the LEDS won't come back on. I don't know why, but it seems this purifiers lights will go out if its unplugged and then plugged in again too quickly. That's a shame if the lights go out that easily. So now I probably will have to return it because if the power/ionizer lights are out then chances are the replace filter light will be too. So I won't know when to replace them now. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars They work quite well
I have only used these for my cool mist humidifiers so far (will try these in my warm mist ones during winter) and they do seem to significantly reduce mildew and odor from formining in the tank. Therefore, I do not have to clean humidifier daily - every 3 days is fine. However, there is a dark film that does form in parts of the humidifier that is tough to remove. It is not mold or mildew.Instead, it seems like hard water stains.Otherwise, the item does work fairly well.

5-0 out of 5 stars These work
Surprisingly, these cartridges actually work in significantly reducing organic build-up. The only problem is that they can slightly discolor the tank of your humidifier where they rest on the bottom. My blue tank turned gray in spots. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Does the job, but rather noisy
The Honeywell seems quite well made. The pre-filter and filter are easy to change. The carry handle on top is useful when you want to move it from room to room. The HEPA filter seems to work fine, as any other True HEPA model will, but my real concern is the noise level.

If all HEPA purifiers were like this, I would accept it, but I recently purchased the "Kenmore 295 CADR True HEPA Air Cleaner" from Sears. It is described as "America's quietest true HEPA high-efficiency air cleaner technology". The Kenmore is _quieter_ on its _highest_ setting, than the honeywell is on its _lowest_ setting, and if you put the Kenmore on its lowest setting, you can barely hear it. You'll have no problem sleeping or watching TV with it running. Note that even though the Kenmore is much quieter, it has a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) twice that of the Honeywell, and it handles a room twice the size. I paid $199 for the Kenmore, so yes, a little more expensive than the honeywell, but absolutely worth it.

So, the honeywell is fine, but you won't want to run it continuously or run it while you sleep because of the noise. There are better models out there. Look into the Kenmore.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong but not that quiet...

They call it QuietCare...It's not all that quiet.I mean, it's throwing out a serious amount of air, and like any fan, it makes noise.Don't expect this to be silent, because it's not.Otherwise though, I find it to be quite nice as an air cleaner.Ultimately, it is easy to replace the filter. You simply twist a knob, remove the filter, add the new one, and tighten the knob.Even my grandma could do it.

You can also program the unit to operate at different speeds at different times. Not exactly revolutionary, but it's nice to know that you can set the thing and leave it alone, and it'll shut off, or switch to low speed when you aren't at home.

Overall, if you want a decent HEPA air filter, this is pretty cherry. This isn't some cheap air filter with a weak fan.You could dry your hair to this thing.Safe around kids and pets, easy to move from room to room, and the set and forget system makes it worth the money. The only reason I'd of bought something else is if I had a bigger room and needed even more power.

4-0 out of 5 stars With a smoker and a cat....
This air cleaner does its job!The white noise doesn't bother me one bit.It doesn't do its job if you have your windows open, however.I can definitely smell the difference when it is not turned on and the smoker is there compared to it being on.We have it on 24x7 and clean out the outer filter (just run the vacuum over it) every 3 months (we've only replaced it once). All in all, it was worth the purchase!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother.
I bought this machine and was very disappointed. It is loud, bulky and does not do a good job filtering the air.I would recommend getting a really good vacuum (we have the yellow Dyson and it does a wonderful job) and just going over your floors and surfaces everyday if you want to cut down on dust and pet hair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I hoped for
I've had this product for about 3 years and am very pleased. The noise level is fine for me.We keep it on low and have no trouble listening to the TV.It also provides some nice white noise for sleeping.
I change the carbon prefilter every 2 months and it is amazing how much dust is on it.I buy cheap replacement carbon filters at Lowes. The HEPA filter I changed once (after 2 years). These are pricey, but with the amount of dust this thing takes out of the air, I knew it was a good investment.
Filters are easy to change, machine itself is easy to clean, and it does a great job. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mabis 15-736-00 digital thermometer fails
I have purchased two of these. The first one died at third attempt to use. The second one gave very inaccurate readings on its second use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not 10/20 seconds...
It starts beeping after about 20 seconds (under arm), but if you keep it there for another minute, the temperature reading goes up by another 0.7-0.8 degree, which is pretty significant. A very good product otherwise. Would be 5 stars if not for 20-second claim.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good product
Simple, easy to use and cheap. what else u want.

This thermometer is really great. It takes no time at all for an accurate reading.I also love the bright green color, so that I when I am in a hurry and looking for it, I can easily find it.I would recommend this item to anyone. ... Read more

Product Description

Ionic Breeze is The Sharper Image's most popular product, with more than one million sold. A leading independent research national survey showed that Ionic Breeze is America's most trusted brand of air purifier. It also confirmed Ionic Breeze enjoys the highest customer satisfaction ratings among all major brands, as demonstrated by repeat purchases by Ionic Breeze owners (and purchases by dissatisfied owners of competing brands); and in ratings for "exceeding expectations," "good customer service" and for "delivering on promises." Compelling features include silent operation; efficient air cleaning and odor reduction; no replacement filters; ultra-low energy use; lightweight, attractive, low-profile housing; and 24-7 air cleaning. Created by Sharper Image Design. No air cleaner can protect against the harmful effects of secondhand tobacco smoke. Clean air begins with a smoke-free environment. Features

  • Room air cleaner circulates and cleans air with no motor, no fan and no noise. Key features include absolutely silent operation; proven efficient air cleaning; odor reduction; no replacement filters; low energy use; lightweight, attractive housing; continuous air cleaning.
  • Our tests at leading research centers show that Ionic Breeze does a great job capturing particles like pollen, dander and other airborne allergens and irritants. Quadra Compact has been tested at America's leading allergy research center, prominent universities and independent labs to confirm its efficient trapping of airborne particles of one micron or larger.
  • Save money! There no messy, expensive filters to find, buy, store and replace. Quadra is an electrostatic precipitator that charges airborne contaminants and traps them on oppositely charged stainless steel collectors that wipe clean. Quadra Compact is powered by only 6 watts. Compared to high-watt HEPA machines, it pays for itself in less than a year.
  • Cleans 24-7! Turn off a noisy HEPA air cleaner and air pollution goes right back to where it started. All air cleaners should run continuously but noisy fans and expensive 200-watt power demands make that impractical with those big HEPA machines. Silent, low-energy Ionic Breeze is designed to run continuously. Plug into 3-prong outlet.
  • Quadra is 19" tall and 4 1/4 lbs, with almost the same cleaning power as the larger Quadra. Uses only 6 watts. Extra collection grid available (SI939). 5-year warranty. Two Sharper Image Ionic Breeze Quadra Compact Silent Air Purifiers (two Gray; 50% off the 2nd) with one FREE $69.95 Air Freshener (SI697GY2). Created by Sharper Image Design.

5-0 out of 5 stars This machine is great. Great, I say!
Ok, I've read all the reviews on this and frankly I am stunned to see so many people give this such a low rating without even trying this...doesn't that defeat the whole concept of "review". What opinion does this create?

Anyways, I've had mine for about 8 months now and I haven't experienced a single problem that is described in some of these reviews.

Yes, you have to clean this machine. To me, it's no more time consuming than washing a couple of pans in the sink or wiping off your kitchen table once a week....about a minute or two. About every week, I take the rails out (that takes about 1 second) bring it into my kitchen or the bathroom. Take a piece of cloth (you can buy a box of about 40 of them for $5 at most home stores like Lowes) get it mildly wet and wipe off the dust. Remember, since it's compacted and attached with a magnetic charge, it's not going to fly off into the air. It comes off very easily...Here's the kicker, I smoke and it still takes about 2 quick swipes on each side of each rail..12 swipes in all (about 30 seconds). Pitch the cloth (about 3 seconds). 40 cloths will last you 40 weeks, so I equivicate that to spending a whopping $5 on maintenance for nearly an entire year. This idea that it's painstakingly difficult to wipe them off is ridiculous. I smoke and I leave the windows open alot.

It's obvious that it works or I wouldn't be cleaning off the rails once a week...sometimes 2. Another exageration is that it only pulls in dust that's within 1/8th of an inch of the rails..Not true, all you have to do is put it the middle of a sunbeam coming through a window to see that it's pulling in dust from up to 2-3 feet away. The dust isn't darting towards the machine till it's about 6 inches away but it does pull it in. Simply walking across the room will stir up enough wind to make even more effective.

Now, onto this ozone issue. If your a logical person you can understand that the higher you have this machine set, the more ozone it may produce. The key is to keep it at low unless you have it in a very large room. I've only experienced the ozone smell when I have it on high in my 14x18 foot living room. The logical person will also understand the precautions laid out in plain english that say that it does in fact produce ozone but at an amount that does not cause any adverse problems if used properly. Key word is PROPERLY. Your heater at home gives off much more ozone. Are you gonna throw that out when it's 30 degrees outside? My philosophy is this...Am I gonna let something so insignificant effect my overall happiness and well being?

I don't experience the respiratory issues as complained about by other people except by the usual minor irritations of smoking a few cigarettes an evening (yes, I'm in the process of quitting) but the most important thing I receive from this machine is that it greatly helps my allergies and my unfortunate problems with sinus infections. I am allergic to dust, mold, grass..you name it. After suffering long enough I followed some friends advice and bought an Ionic Breeze and things have definitely improved. Ozone can't kill you unless you have a hose down your throat and it's pumping it into your lungs. What's a measurement of meeting federal guidelines gonna really do to me?

I don't have any idea how your negative experiences really went but for crying out loud, don't write a "review" unless you've actually used it and used your own judgment rather than listen to Consumer Reports. While they've had some very helpful recommendations, they've also screwed up badly on many things, especially electronics. Personally, I don't pay much attention to them because they go by what their own standards are, not mine and if you take the time to familiarize yourself with the intricicies of how a product works, chances are, you'll make a better decision than Consumer Reports can make for you.

As far as the noise and the cleaning of wires goes...Yeah, it makes a noise equivilant to the sound of a short, quiet shush. If that irritates you, chill out or get up and clean off the rails or turn it off. That's nothing more than a helpful sound to let you know it needs to be wiped off. You can't even hear it unless it's totally quiet in the room anyways....and cleaning off the wires on the inside is nothing more than just flipping this 4 pound monster over then back right side up (takes about 3 seconds)..the bearings on the wires shoot the dirt right off. I don't even do that but maybe once a month.

So....if you're lazy and don't like cleaning a small item ,at most, once a week for about 2-3 minutes, or you complain about a quiet non abrasive noise that won't happen for 2-3 weeks without cleaning when you're too lazy to clean it off, or you find a trace amount of EXTRA ozone in your life harmful and you'd rather buy a new blow dryer (which also emits trace amounts of ozone because anything that pushes air through electro-charged metal emits ozone) then this machine is not for you.

Pros:

-You can't hear it working
-No filters to ever change
-Runs on around 10 watts. Imagine that it's 6 times less expensive than having a 60 watt lightbulb on which allows you to run it 24 hours a day and it's the equivilant of having that 60 watt lightbulb run for 4 hours...now imagine if that's a 100 watt lightbulb or 4-5 bulbs running at the same time..well, you get the picture.
-Removes enough dust to be noticeable...remember, there isn't a filtration device on the market that can remove everything without costing thousands of dollars.
- Helps allergy sufferers and animals with allergies.
- Helps remove odors from things like pets, smoke, food, mildew, etc..
- No non-cleaning maintenance whatsoever.

Cons:
- Trace amounts of ozone which if you actually read medical articles, you'll learn that ozone therapy is actually a very useful thing (not saying it's totally safe, just using a positive spin on what some people see as a dangerous issue)
- Price. It is expensive for some people. But I'll pay the money for a good product any day. I did that with everything inmy life, why not an air purifier?
- You have to clean it...boo hoo
- You have to use a towel to clean it...oh god
- Makes a very, very quiet noise sometimes...call the sheriff!

Read these FACTS about Ozone and hopefully, you'll understand it better. Consumer reports doesn't do reviews of the medical profession if you haven't noticed already.

Ozone, (O3), sometimes called "activated oxygen", contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms we normally breathe. Ozone is the second most powerful sterilant in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses and odors. Interestingly ozone occurs quite readily in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms. In fact the "fresh, clean, spring rain" smell that we notice after a storm most often results from nature's creation of ozone. However, we are probably most familiar with ozone from reading about the "ozone layer" that circles the planet above the earth's atmosphere. Here ozone is created by the sun's ultra-violet rays. This serves to protect us from the ultra-violet radiation.

HOW DOES OZONE WORK?

While ozone is very powerful, it has a very short life-cycle. When contaminants such as odors, bacteria or viruses make contact with ozone, they are destroyed completely by oxidation. In so doing, that extra atom of oxygen is consumed and there is nothing left...no odor...no bacteria...no extra atom, only oxygen.Ozone reverts back to oxygen after it is used.

HOW IS OZONE PRODUCED?

There are basically two methods of producing ozone...ultra-violet and corona discharge.Corona discharge creates ozone by applying high voltage to a metallic grid sandwiched between two dielectrics. The high voltage jumps through the dielectric to a grounded screen and in the process, creates ozone from oxygen present in the chamber.Ultra-violet (UV) light creates ozone when a wavelength at 254 nm (nanometers) hits an oxygen atom. The molecule (O2) splits into two atoms (O), which combine with another oxygen molecule (O2) to form ozone (O3).

HOW LONG DOES THE OZONE LAST?

As soon as ozone is formed in the generator and dispersed in a room, some of it reverts back into oxygen. This step occurs by several processes including the following: Oxidation reaction with an organic material such as odors or smoke. Reactions with bacteria etc., which again consumes ozone by oxidation reactions. Additionally ozone itself has a half life which means that "residual" ozone created (extra ozone) will return to oxygen usually within 30 minutes, in amounts equal to half its level. What this means is that after each subsequent 30 minute period there would be half as much residual ozone left at the end of the period as was present at the beginning of the period. This is similar to a geometric progression of 16;8;4;2;1. In practice the half life is usually less than 30 minutes due to temperature, dust, and other contaminants in the air. Therefore, ozone, while very powerful, doesn't last long.It does its job and then disappears.

WILL THE ODOR COME BACK?

No. If ozone is applied properly it destroys (oxidizes) the source of the odor. However, in the case of mildew the odor will return if you are unable to get rid of the moisture that is the source of the mildew.

HOW DOES OZONE HANDLE TOBACCO SMOKE?

It eliminates the irritation caused by phenol gasses, by oxidizing them. Phenol gasses are the invisible part of tobacco smoke that causes such discomfort to one's eyes and create the offensive odors. Ozone rids any environment of the effects of smoke completely, rather than merely filtering out the visible particles.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT LEVEL OF OZONE?

The right level is when all the generated ozone is being consumed. This only applies to continuous ozone use in occupied environments - not for shock treating. However, this is difficult to attain because it becomes a balancing act. Initially the machine's output is set high to get rid of the problem odor as quickly as possible. As this is being accomplished less ozone is required for the diminishing odor etc., thereby leaving some residual ozone in the air. If the machine output is not turned down, then more residual ozone will remain. If a strong smell of ozone is noticed, then there is more ozone present than is required. Simply turn the rheostat (output level control) down. With ozone, more is not considered better.

NOTE: It is not necessary that ozone be detected by humans for it to be effective.Ozone can work even when humans are not able to smell it.

IS OZONE HARMFUL AND WHAT IF ANY ARE THE LONG TERM EFFECTS?

Ozone has been known for almost a century, so a great deal is known about it. Several regulatory agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), have stipulated that the safe allowable level of residual is 0.10-ppm (parts per million). Note that this permissible level is for continuous exposure throughout an entire 8 hour day for 5 days a week. The temporary affects of such a low exposure would range from headaches, to sore throats, irritation in the eyes, and nose.No long term effects have ever been documented from ozone exposure.Ask Ozone Solutions for MSDS sheets if desired.

.....If you want a device to measure the amount of ozone in a room, go here, http://www.ozoneapplications.com/products/sensor_product_line.htm. I found it just 5 minutes ago off google.

Remember, only set the machine in accordance to the size of the room. If the salesperson did their job right, they will tell you that, plus, it's in the manual.

I keep my Ionic Breeze in the open doorway between my living room and dining room with it's back facing the back door where my dog comes in and out of (the source of most of the dust). It's slim enough to not get in the way and the way I have it faced it shoots the clean air into the living room where I spend most of my time when I'm home.

Hope this helps. I wrote a long review because I thought alot of people weren't being fair about this machine and they're letting a magazine dictate their actions without truly knowing the facts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Simple fact.....
You need to move air in order to clean it...how do you clean something that you can't get a hold of?You need a fan in order to actually clean air.The Ionic Breeze is an overpriced dust collector.

1-0 out of 5 stars This product sucks
Unfortunately I became aware too late of the negative review given this product by Consumer Report. It doesn't even warrant one star. Avoid it like the plague and save your money!

3-0 out of 5 stars Misconception about ozone issue
Another reviewer expressed concern about the ozone generated by the Ionic Breeze and provided a link to an EPA article on "Ozone Generators that are Sold as Air Cleaners: An Assessment of Effectiveness and Health Consequences"

BUT The Ionic breeze is an Electrostatic Precipitator, NOT an "Ozone Generator"

In fact, if you read the EPA article all the way through, they even mention how Electrostatic Percipitator's have been shown to be more effective for air filtration than ionizers that generate ozone.here is the quote: " In recent experiments, ionizers were found to be less effective in removing particles of dust, tobacco smoke, pollen or fungal spores than either high efficiency particle filters or electrostatic precipitators. "- see review by Muthu "MS" for the link to this article.

The use of "Ionic" in the name should not confuse you.The Ionic Breeze is an Electrostatic Precipitator.Ozone Generators deliberately generate ozone... the ionic breeze works on a different principle and any ozone that is created indirectly by the machine is miniscule and a result of chemical reactions in the air, outside of the unit, that have to do with the charge of certain particles. Furthermore, to the extent that extremely low levels of ozone are created indirectly, it will "disintegrate" within minutes.

And by the way, the "smell" of the Ionic Breeze is not caused by Ozone either, which many other reviewers seemed to think.

so how effective is the Ionic Breeze?Well, I don't know, I am still trying to decide whether to get one.I gave it three stars because thats the middle of the range and i didn't want to skew the ratings up or down by giving it a high or low score.I can only tell you my decision won't be effected by misunderstandings about ozone.

4-0 out of 5 stars here it is
It is amazing that these units move air without using fans and silently. I use them in bedrooms
and I had to cover the led lights with electrical tape because they are so bright that
they light up the ceiling. You can still see the lights as they are bright enough to shine
through the tape. Also they come with a 3 prong electrical plug so you'll have to get an
adapter if your wall sockets are the older 2 prong.

The unit has 3 speeds (high, medium and low). They don't speed up or slow down the speed of
the air coming out of the unit. They work on a timer. The high is continuous. The medium
cycles the unit on approximately 30 seconds and then off 30 seconds. The low cycles the unit
on 30 seconds and off approximately 2 minutes.

As far as cleaning, I haven't used the red light because the unit makes a crackling noise
when it gets dirty. So I clean it when it makes noise. I dampen the microfibre cloth that
comes with the unit and clean the plates. Also the unit has 2 wires with a bead on each and
to clean them you have to turn the unit upside down so that the bead slides along the wire.

The air freshener has to be plugged into a wall socket and firmly seated. If it isn't, it will
make a rattling noise. I couldn't place the freshener where I wanted because of this. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not clean the air
I bought this purifier in hope to get rid of tobacco smoke odour in my apartment left over from the previous tenant. First unpleasant surprize was when I openned the box was that this filter smells! It smelled with acetone plastic glue so much that I had to run it for a week on the balcony in order for this glue smell to go away. After that I ran the unit inside my apartment and it did not produce any change in the air quality - the tobacco smoke odour was still there and you could see the dust particles floating in the beam of sunlight from the window. When I opened up the filter and checked it, it had no dust accumulated at all an what I notised that the quality with which it was assembled was kind of low. The plastic edges of the casing were rough and you could see the glue stains all over the IFD filter. This thing is definitely not worth two hundred dollars. Despite the fact that I had to pay shipping, I returned this unit back to the store.

3-0 out of 5 stars its ok
this product makes so much ozone that i think it is for people that want to restore the hole in the ozone layer

3-0 out of 5 stars Displeased ......
I purchased this unit and used it for about one week. The reason I bought this unit was that when the sunlight came in the picture window just right, you can see the cloud of particles floating in the air.

So I bought this filter and placed it dead center of the area illuminated by the sunlight. After running the unit for 24 hrs/day for about 8 days on low and a couple 4-5 hour periods on high, I inspected the filter for debris/dust.I was surprised to find no dust accumilation at all.As a matter of fact, the only dust that could be found in the unit at all was on the large particle screen in which the holes are so large, it would be large enough to permit small insects can get through with no problems.

Thinking that it was defective (i.e. the voltage creating device could be bad and how would you know), I returned the unit.I also purchased a MIRV 11 HVAC filter which purports to clean the air of the same types of particles.I intended to provide myself a reference point when judgeing the IFD results.

After 14 days of 24 hr/day low operation, I can tell the difference between the AC filter and the IFD.The AC filter is aquiring a fine covering of dust turning the filter off-white.The IFD has not accumiliated any significant dust.Again, the only thing getting dusty is the "pre-filter" which is a plastic pad with lots of large holes.

At this point, I cannot believe that this filter system works and I have decided to return it.

Oh, the only quiet setting is low.Hi is quite noisy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Honeywell is bad news.
I purchased the Honeywell warm-mist humidifier in December 2004.The machine died after 20 days.We only ran it at night and it worked fine until it died. The warranty is for five years. However, it costs $10 for a repair service fee in addition to the cost of shipping it to Massachussetts. After all that I may as well buy another humidifier. This time another brand.

3-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
Pros -
Quiet.I have it right next to my bed.Other than the occasional blurb (water bubble), it's very quiet.

Remote is useful. No need to get out of bed to turn it on.

No filter to buy.Easy to clean.

Room for Improvement -
The humidity meter is useless. It started at 20%, and kept it at 20%-25% after a whole night on high. The room is only 12 by 12, so it has to be wrong. This also means, my humidifyer will never turn itself off, because I set it to 60%.

I think the meter is measuring what's on the floor level.I have hard wood floor, maybe that's why?

The LCD display is impossible to read when humidifyer is placed on floor. You have to kneel down to read.

First few time, the vapor has a weird smell.

Cons -
It's not really 3 gallons. On high, it'll run for about 5-6 hours only.On low, it'll run for about 10 hours.

Not easy to change water. You have to pull the container out, then flip it over to fill it, and flip it back to put it in.Seniors may not have the strength to do it.

When water run out, it just blinks with the RESET icon.It doesn't shut itself off.And after a couple weeks, I cannot press the RESET button to reset it.I have to unplug / replug the power. It also started a burnt smell, which worries me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
Have had this unit for almost 2 years.Love this unit and planning to buy another because I've moved into a bigger place. I've not had any problems with it whatsoever.

Features I like about this unit:
-- the tank lasts a good 7-8 hours at the high level so I turn it on before I go to sleep and don't have to wake up and refill in the middle of the night.
-- almost maintenance free.I only have to wash it once every year (after winter) before storing for the next winter.I've seen another review where more washings may be necessary (probably due to hard water).
-- no filters to use (cool mist humidifiers require this). This is probably a personal preference but I don't like the idea of spending $$ to buy filters.

What I don't like about the unit:
-- humidity gauge is useless/unreliable.At first I tried using the humidity gauge to control the unit's operation but soon I find it to be in accurate. What I do now is let it run till the tank runs out, or use the timer.
-- this unit is extremely quiet, except for the occasional gurgling when the water through the tank.

Both things I don't like about are really minor (to me) or I wouldnt' have kept it.But they are the same reasons I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke After a Week
I've had my humidifier for only a week and it is already broken. I ran it once a day or so until it was empty. Then one morning I checked on it to find that it was off. It just shut down on it's own and I can't get any power.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop working after one winter
Worked for one winter. And this year after using it twice it stopped working. Right now it can't be turned on and once it's plugged in the digital display just blinks. Called www.kaz.com and I have to pay $30 to cover the cost for shipping to have it fixed.

By the way, my friend got the same unit a week after I got mine.
Her unit is acting the same way now....Does that mean they have really good 'Quality Control' ??

Amazon.com Review

Exceptionally quiet, this big air cleaner is recommended for closedrooms up to 488 square feet in size. It has four speeds, a lighted,digital-display control panel that monitors filter performance, and two filters. One ofthe filters is true HEPA, meaning it's at least 99.97 percent effective intrapping extremely tiny particles (as small as 0.3 microns) and removing smoke, pollen, dust, animal dander, dust mites, and molds from the air. The other is anactivated charcoal filter that removes odors from the air and captures largeparticles before they reach the HEPA filter, prolonging the latter's life.Designed slim so it can be placed unobtrusively against a wall, the air cleanermeasures 18-1/2 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 8-3/4 inches deep. The handlesmake it easy to move the appliance from room to room. It carries a five-yearwarranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Defective on delivery
The quality control at the Bionaire plant is obviously unsatisfactory based on my purchase and the other reviews posted here. After receiving the air cleaner I discovered that two of the four speeds did not work.Additionally, the low speed fluctuated between low and high speed. The lighted control panel only displayed the fan speed and not the other functions.I would never buy another product from this company. What a piece of junk!

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS!
Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to the Amazon reviews before buying and I paid the price. The Bioaire worked fine for exactly one month and then it died.I called Bionaire and they told me to reset it by unplugging the machine for 15 minutes and then plugging it back in.That worked for two days, then it died completely.I cannot believe Bionaire continues to sell a machine that CLEARLY has serious motor issues. In any case, I'm returning it to Amazon and getting a refund. What a waste.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible quality control, these products don't work!
Here's the letter that I sent to Bionaire...I've yet to receive any "satisfaction" (i.e., my money back or a unit that works).

"Where to begin....I originally purchased a Bionaire BAP1175 unit from Amazon.com.The unit worked but I could not get it to reliably go into the Sleep setting. After several weeks I decided to return the unit and get a replacement. You sent out the second unit, and that unit worked great...for two days, after which it completely died, and hasn't worked since, and this, after having waited for nearly a month for the replacement.I decided to be restrained when I called, and spoke with a very nice customer service rep., who agreed to send me out a replacement, 2nd day air.The replacement was a BAP1300.This unit worked fine, for one day as well, and now won't turn on.I believe that there must be a fundamental flaw in the design of these units.I am sending this letter as a last attempt at receiving some satisfaction. If I don't reach a satisfactory resolution I will feel compelled to search out every consumer review site on the Web, and post my negative opinion of Bionaire and your air filter products. It's a FAN for goodness sake!!I have to say I'm suprised I've had this much trouble. The unit itself seems quite sturdy, it just simply doesn't work."

Stay away from this product, if you don't want to experience endless frustration.

1-0 out of 5 stars This unit sucks!!!
I have had this unit for 3 years now! I swear I have had to turn it back on atleast 4-5 times a week cuz it simply shuts off on its own! I was gonna call them so they could send me a replacement until I read everyone's reviews and it seems like all of us have the same issue with this defective product! Back 3 years ago I cashed out close to 300 bucks for it and now I realize it was the biggest waste of money ever! You'd be better off using the HEPA filter on your vacume cleaner 24/7 than this unit! DO NOT BUY IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want a AIr Cleaner save yourself and Don't Buy this
I had two within a week , one worked one day and stopped for NO reason , then a another one was sent and it workedless then 30 minutes and stopped as well. at least Amazon., sends a lable to return it back , But Bionaire should get out of the air cleaning business , i will never BUY another product from this company. ...
