Product Description

Tanita calls this scale the Family Model, designed for adults, kids and the athletes of the family. A setting on this scale lets you differentiate between all three so the readings given are accurate from the weight to the percentage of body fat. It includes a memory recall that lets you keep track of any gains or losses for up to four people so you never have to write it down or try to remember from one time to the next. It even tells you whether or not your weight is considered healthy or not. For guests that visit, there's also a button for them so there's no confusing their weight results with yours. Another innovative feature, unique to this scale, is the Daily Calorie Intake mode that estimates how many calories should be consumed in a 24-hour period in order to maintain your current weight, assisting you in your dietary planning for the day's meals. The digital display is large and easy to read. Operates on four "AA" batteries (included). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great piece of equipment, but you MUST be careful when using
I have been using this scale for 3 months to track my weight/fat level as I try to drop a little fat and gain some muscle by working out often. I have been using the scale in the morning and everning almost every day to smooth out any irregularities in measurements, and I've learned a lot about the scale in the process. According to the scale, in the last 3 months, I've gained 2 lbs of fat and 11 lbs of lean mass (hopefully I can use all that new muscle to burn that fat back off!).

First, it seems to be very consistent. I have watched my weight gradually increase and if I eat a meal shortly before weighing myself, I weigh unusually high, and if I do extra cardio work and don't eat as much in a day, that evening my fat % will be lower than usual.

In addition to those kinds of effects, I weigh an average of 1.5 pounds more in the evening and my fat level is 2.6% higher in the morning. All these facts point out that consistency in measurements is CRITICAL if you want your results to mean anything. If you want to weigh yourself once a week, you must be very careful that the conditions are the same.

I highly recommend weighing yourself regularly and averaging values. That's what I'm doing and I find my results much more useful than occasional weighing. For example, last week my lowest weight in the evening was 182.6 and the highest was 187. Similar things happen with fat percentages. Last week I varied between 11.2% and 14.9% in the evenings. Those numbers make the scale sound inconsistent, but I have been graphing weekly averages, and the trends have been very consistent. My weight has been up 1.5-2.5 lbs every week, and fat% is changing no more than 0.5% from one week to the next and it's staying in a narrow range (13-14).

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't change a thing. I highly recommend these scales. It would be great if once a week or once a month testing on expensive equipment was adequate, but unless you are making huge changes, day to day fluctuations will make results hard to interpret. Using a scale like this will help to give you meaningful, week to week results. It's been a big help in keeping me motivated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tanita BF682 Body Fat Scale
I am disappointed in this scale because of the inaccuracy with the body fat monitor.I had purchased a Health-o-meter just a week before and returned it because we thought the body fat percentage was way off. So I had heard Tanita was very good, and went ahead and purchased this with Amazon. My husband, son and daughter all show low body fat, and all are thin and fit people, so I guess it's accurate. But when I get on the scale, my body fat % is showing 32%.When I had mine done professionally at our local college gym, it was 22%.I am a 43 year old women who works out every day lifting weights and doing aerobics.I am 5'9" and weigh 146.The problem is, when I get on the scale using my husband's setting, my body fat % reading is 13%.He is 6 feet tall and weighs 166.So why is that?Is it just taking some calculation based on my settings? It looks at my age, height and weight and thinks "middle aged woman" hmm, 32%.That's what is seems like, anyhow.I thought it was based on the electronic component that actually measures your body composition.Maybe I was just uninformed, but, this just doesn't seem right.I gave three stars because the weight seems to be correct for all 4 members of my family, and I like that it is consistent and gives readings to the nearest two-tenths.It also stores the last reading.

I recommend everyone get their body composition done at a gym like I did.It was inexpensive, quick and easy. Then you'll know for sure.Save some money and get a scale that gives weight only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tanita BF682 is a great scale - consistent and dependable.
For years I weighed myself with a Health-O-Meter scale and "guessed" at my weight. I would pop on the scale, get off and allow it to reset, pop back on and find my weight would vary usually by 1-3 pounds. But once by 20 pounds!

After much frustration I decided to invest in the Tanita BF682. The BF682 is a sturdy attractive metal and plastic scale with some great features. After I purchased it I put it on a level surface (rugs are a no-no) and weighed myself about 10 times in a row not giving the scale a chance to reset. To my pleasure I weighed the exact same each time right down to .2 of a pound!

The scale has several buttons in the front that you tap with your foot to program in up to four family members height, weight, activity level and age. When you step on the scale you will get a read out with your weight and body fat. In order to ensure an accurate bodyfat measurement, you should weigh at the same time each afternoon (not first thing in the morning as you are not hydrated) in your bare feet. There is also a "guest" button so a guest can get a bodyfat and weight reading and a weigh only button that will give weight only.

Tanita works by sending a small electrical current through your body to read your bodyfat. You do not experience any discomfort at all, but those with a pacemaker should not use it as the electrical current may interfere with the operation of the pacemaker. After it has read your body fat the scale will give you the number and also a small icon will tell you if you are underfat, healthy, overfat or obese.

One super nice thing about this scale is the DCI or daily caloric intake. That's right! Along with your bodyfat and weight, this scale is so smart it will also tell you how many calories you are consuming to weigh what you do. If you want to beef up - eat more calories than the number shown and if you want to skinny down - eat less. Very motivational.

The scale operates on 4 double A batteries that are included as are easy to follow directions.

If you are looking for a bodyfat, daily caloric intake and weight scale this is an excellent scale. In April 2005, however, Tanita is set to release a new set of scales called Innerscan. These will vary in features but may monitor body functions such as water %, bone mass, muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, metabolic age and daily calorie intake along with weight and body fat depending on the model you choose. Starting price will only be about $10 more so you many want to check into those models also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad experience with this purchase
I bought one BF682 and two BF792 for holiday gifts while they have promotion on Tanita.Unfortunately, I received all three scales were opened box.

The BF682 is work properly but the bottom on top is not that smooth when pressed, so I requested for exchange. The exchanged one is opened box either and it has the same problem as the first one.

Two BF792 have problems with the fat %.I've tried 15 times on the first one, only 3 times showed the fat %, they are 8%, 18% & 23%.I've tired 10 times on the second one, none of them showed the fat %.Of course, I requested for exchange. The exchanged scales are also opened box. They work fine although the bottom is not smooth.

Since I have no time to buy another gifts, therefore, I keep all three opened box scales.I was extremely angry and disappointed with this purchase.Amazon, do you have quality control on all stuffs that you sale? From this bad experience, I am scare to buy electronic from Amazon again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps you motivated
My wife got this scale for me for Father's Day.I was interested in knowing my body fat percentage so that I could track my progress over time. What I hadn't counted on is that this regular feedback is a great motivator for meeting your personal goals.Since the scale is accurate to 0.2lb and 0.1% body fat, you can see the impact of small changes to your eating or workout habits. As a result, I have made faster progress in achieving my goals than I had thought was possible.

This was a wonderful investment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scale!
I got this scale about a week ago and absolutely love it! Don't get fooled by its size - it's smaller and thinner than some other scales so you can store it more easily. It's very precise - I even tried weighting myself several times in a row and always got the same reading!
It has a little switch on the bottom so you can choose whether you want your weight shown in pounds or kilograms. Based on your settings, it displays weight in either 0.2 kg or 0.5 lb increments.
If you store the scale elsewhere than where you weigh yourself, the manual prompts you to step on the scale, and then step off regardless of the reading. Then you step on it again and weigh yourself as usual. That way the scale adjusts itself to the different surface and the reading is more accurate.
Overall, I would recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate scale
I have owned this scale for about a week. First of all, the manual is well written, simple, and accurate. Both my mother and I use the scale and have found it to be accurate as compared to our old analog scale. To be honest, our old scale gave varying readings of 1 and 2 pound differences with each repeated weighing at 1-minute intervals. The Taylor 7009 gave consistent readings under the same test everytime except once where the pound difference was up by 0.5.

The scale is relatively small, neat, and gorgeous with its black and silver finish. It has quite a slim profile, and it does feel solid and seems durable, but only time will tell if it is durable. The display is large and the numbers are very easy to read. On the topic of the display, it must be noted that the scale gives a reading within 3 to 4 seconds of standing on it, and it dutifully turns itself off after a few seconds. (I believe this is why the battery would be able to last a lifetime as the manufacturer promises).

It is very sensitive, so it is advisable that once you stand on it, remain as still as possible, because too much movement will result in an Error message on the display. This is easily resolved by stepping off and then on the scale again.

In short, this is a beautifully made scale which functions the way it should - accurately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it
I just got these- I must comment on them.

1) Although the blurb doesn't mention it, these come with a case.
2) the threaded design is excellent- the weights won't slip off (or even budge) as compared with those clunky weight sets that have those butterfly clip things.
3) I got these at 10% off, so they were the same as similar sets without the rubber grips.Trust me, those are definitely worth it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!!!
You are better off using your money for disposable test sticks. Why? Because:
1.Getting up in the middle of the night (or early morning) to pee throws off the monitor's result, leading to the wrong "peak" days.
2.Missing the first test day (cycle day 6 or so) throws off the monitor's result, leading to the wrong "peak" days.
(Note: I confirmed with my doctor and other tests that this monitor gave the wrong result, missing ovulation by four days).
3. There is no ability to scroll back and forth to review previous month's data.
4.The setting of the time window for testing is very unintuitive and inconveniently restrictive.
5.Per the company's spokeperson, the monitor only picks up one "peak" day and automatically labels the following day also as "peak" regardless of what is actually detected in the urine. This is problematic because the monitor can get the first peak day wrong for the reasons above and, because of this feature, does not allow you to continue to monitor to detect your real peak. (Actually, it does allow you to submit a sample but the result is pre-determined).
6.There is actually very little useful information about the so-called period of "high" fertility preceding the "peak" time. The monitor doesn't actually use your previous cycles like it claims to (so say their representatives when you call to ask about it).
7.The representatives of the company are not very knowledgeable about their product, refuse to share information about how it works on grounds that it's proprietary, and generally are quite rude when you call with questions.

You would do just as well and save a lot of money buying the inexpensive test sticks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skeptic turned believer!!!
I just want to start by saying we had been trying for quite some time and I purchased this with little hopes it would help.I ordered this in the beginning of January and I am happy to say that we are expecting our 1st child!!!!!I have always used those other sticks and thought they were fine but I was testing at the wrong time or the "end" of my peak time.It is more $ than the regular sticks, but it will help you to narrow down your peak and fertile days. Our 1st month using it it worked and showed me I ovulate earlier than I thought, I recommend it if you have tried other methods besides medical.Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars 1st time using CPFM= Triple Blessing!
I got PG (with Triplets!) during my first cycle using the CPFM. The monitor was clearly able to pinpoint my exact "peak" time of the month, and it was SO easy to use. My favorite thing about the monitor is that it takes the "guesswork" out of knowing if you're going to ovulate or not, and no need to worry or stress over not being able to read traditional ovulation tests. This monitor is definitely worth the $ and I recommend it to anyone who is TTC!

4-0 out of 5 stars Print out service warning!!!
I agree with the other reviewers that this is a good product. But beware if you are counting on the print out service.

First, when you call to inquire about it they tell you that they only provide a one time print out service as a courtesy. If you need it in the future they will not provide it. They also ask for the barcode from your monitor which I assume they use to track requests. They then explain that they have a send a data card and a permission form to you which you returnto them. Then they print out the results and send them to you.Which obviously takes some time.So don't plan on getting the information quickly.

If anyone knows a repeatable and quicker way to get the data out of the unit please email me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trying for our second Clearblue Baby!
I bought this item about 3 years ago, and my clearblue baby is going to be 3 in March. We had tried for 3 years before before purchasing this moniter, my cycles are somewhat irregular so it was hard to detect my peak fertility days. We concived on the third month of using this moniter! We are now going to use it agian to concieve another child. What a great product for helping to concieve. Very easy to use and understand, takes out all the
guessing, and helps you concive a baby natrually ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Taylor 7000 EXP Precision
This scale worked exactly ONCE.It broke almost immediately. The readings are way off now, when it offers up a number at all.DO NOT BUY.

1-0 out of 5 stars lasted only 1 year--complete junk
I owned this model for 1 year before it gave me the "batt" signal.after I spent another $7 on new lithium batteries, it turned out the scale was broken.looking on the web, I discovered lots of other stories like mine.advice:find another brand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
When this scale arrived, the battery was dead.I called the company and they sent a new battery which took over a week. Now with the scale "working", it takes almost 10 seconds for the weight to show up on the screen and further, 8 times out of 10 the scale reads "ERR" and I have to get off and get back on.In addition, this scale reads over five pounds more than the scale I weigh in on at Weight Watchers.I would NOT recommend this scale to anyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taylor 7000 Precision Tech Lithium Elec. Scales
Have had my scales for a few years.I am the type of person who gets weighed every morning having been a model in Australia around World War 2These are the best scales I have ever had and would recommend them to anyone who likes to bevery accurate when getting weighed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weight loss incentive!
I started with the Taylor Analog Large Dial Bath Scale but could never see the subtle downturn in weight, would get frustrated and give up.After all, losing 2 pounds a week won't show up well on an analog scale, and I need all the incentive I can find. Some say that you should only weigh yourself once a week while dieting, but I need the constant reminder that the extra helping really isn't worth it.

I love this scale, it let's me know exactly where I stand. It keeps me out of the fridge. And keeps me motivated when I can see myself go down in tenths of a pound.Also- my house is tiny and this small scale fits just about ANYWHERE!

Go get one! The price is right, and so is the motivation benefit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best scale I've ever had!
I love this scale! It looks great, even has special attachments for the feet for using it on a carpet. I've never seen that before. As for the tapping issue, you do have to give it a good thump to turn it on, but I think people are hesitant because it's a glass scale. I know I was, but now that I've got the thump pressure figured out, it works the first time, every time. It's amazingly sturdy. I even went to my doctor's office to test it's accuracy against his scale, and it weighed within a half-pound of my WW scale. I also love the idea of a lifetime battery. The less maintenance, the better. It has even spurred me to start thinking about joining Weight Watchers to go with my scale. I bought this at an Amazon Friday Sale, and with free shipping, I paid only $29.99. One of the best bargains I've found in a while. The only thing I didn't like about this scale is what it said I weighed when I stepped on it the first time. A little too accurate for my taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!!
Just got my scale a few weeks ago and it is right on with the scale at my ww center!!Worth the money for sure!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality product.
I have been using this for more than 6 months now and found no problems whatsoever with accuracy of the instrument. In fact I read somewhere in a recent comparison of bath scales that WW42 one of the most accurate and coolest looking amongst several comparable brands. You do have to tap a little harder to start it but nothing out of the ordinary. It deserves a full 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't actually own one...
I don't own one of these scales, but this is just to address the issue of having to tap it really hard to get it to start....If you read the amazon review, it specifically states that it is meant to weight as soon as you step on.I am making the assumption from that review that the tapping is not required, hence, that's why you have to tap it so hard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Weight Watchers ww42 scale
I wanted to write a review on this scale myself. Some of the others I have read were negative and I wanted to write something positive. The design of the scale itself is very neat. I've never seen a scale quite like this one before.
There were many comments about having difficulty getting the initial display to pop up and having to hit the scale very hard to get it to operate. I have no difficulty with this. The only thing that may have been a problem for the other folks is when you turn the scale over it has a red isulator sheild that must be removed in order to operate the battery. Perhaps this wasn't removed. Not sure. Anyway, after I read that in the instruction booklet I had no problems. I love the fact that this scale measures .01 of a pound rather than in .05 pound increments. It's actually why I purchased it. I had no trouble reading the numbers display. I only wish it was a tad smaller, a little more than I wanted to pay for a scale but worth the money.
As far as accuracy goes. I had no problems there either. My weight remained consistant with each weigh within several minutes. Overall...a very good buy. ... Read more

How much of your body weight comes from fat and how much from lean muscle? This scale lets you know so that you can make choices to improve and monitor your health. Tanika has patented a precise, easy way to use the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) method at home. Simply enter your personal data using the ‘set,’ ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons, and then stand barefoot on the scale. Electrodes in the foot sensor pads send a low-level electrical current through the body which measures the percentage of body fat. How? The current passes quickly through muscle and is slowed by fat.

One or two users can program the scale with their following personal data: age, height, and male or female. A switch on the back lets the user choose metric, imperial, or stones/pounds. The large one-line digital display shows weight followed by body fat percentage, and indicates whether the user is underfat, healthy, overfat, or obese. A chart included in the instruction booklet shows appropriate ranges of fat percentage for age and gender. A ‘guest’ button allows one-time readings without reprogramming one of the two memory stores. The weight capacity of this scale is 300 pounds (136 kilograms; 21 stones/6 pounds).

The scale, white with metallic foot pads, measures 11-1/2 by 12 by 2 inches and should be used on a hard, level, dry floor. Four AA batteries (included) are required for operation. The monitor is intended for adults (up to age 99) and children (age 7 and older) who lead inactive or moderately active lifestyles. The body fat monitor is not intended for use by pregnant women, people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic medical devices, professional athletes, or bodybuilders. Body fat percentage estimates may vary from day to day due to hydration changes from alcohol consumption, menstruation, illness, and other such factors. Readings taken at the same time everyday under consistent conditions will be most accurate. Tanita covers this scale with a three-year warranty. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Can't beat the accuracy
I am very surprised by the accuracy this scale can achieve.I had an analog bathroom scale for a long time, and I was often disappointed by the constantly changing readings (+/- 5 pounds). For the tanita, accuracy has never been a problem since I bought it.I have seen some complaints about inaccurate reading on uneven surface, but I have never met this problem.I use it mainly on hard kitchen ground.

The body fat monitor is fun, but I don't really care about it.You can just ignore it after taking your weight. The procedure taking weight is fairly straightforward, as the weight is independent on the age setting etc (the body fat reading does).

Overall it is a very fine product.A++

3-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent; OK if you only want general idea of bodyfat/wt
The scale is inconsistent. The only thing it is consistent about is its inconsistency.Often, I would weigh myself and get a reading of, say, 23% body fat. Then I would weigh myself an hour later and get 20% body fat.I understand that a person's weight fluctuates throughout the day, but I sincerely doubt a person's body fat fluctuates throughout the day (not to mention hour by hour). Also, I have tried weighing myself at the exact same time each day so as to give the scale a fighting chance w/ regard to the normal day-to-day body fluctuations...and there is STILL inconsistency...not by a pound or two or a percentage or two...but sometimes even by 5 lbs.

If you just want a general idea of what your weight and body fat is, go w/ this scale. If you're a person like me who is trying to lose a small amount of weight (therefore making accurate readings very important) then do your research and go for a better model.

1-0 out of 5 stars Major flaw - Beware!
I bought this scale a year ago and was very happy with the accuracy and the body fat measurement feature.Unfortunately I can't recommend it because it is not durable under real world conditions.I was cleaning my shower one day and accidentally left the glass door open a crack and a fine spray of water landed on it.Of course I wiped it off and then turned it on to make sure it was ok, but one of the buttons wouldn't work.I thought "no big deal", I'll just let it dry out and it will work again. That never happened, it's permanently broken.Since you need to use the buttons in order to activate it, I can't use it properly anymore.I called Tanita to see about getting it fixed under warranty, but they say that it's not a defect because I let it get wet.Well I checked the manual, and it doesn't say that the scale should not be exposed to water, somehow I was supposed to magically infer this.Obviously it's electronic and you don't want to submerge or drown it, but it seems to me that an appliance which lives in the bathroom should be able to handle the occasional splash of water.

According to the Tanita rep I spoke with, the scale should not be exposed to water in any way, even when you wipe it to clean it (I asked how you are supposed to clean it without getting it wet, I was being difficult).I don't know how they realistically expect anyone to achieve 100% dryness in a bathroom setting, where every activity you do involves water.Their recommendation was to move it to another room with no water - not exactly practical for most people.Needless to say, if you are considering this scale for your bathroom I highly recommend you make sure you have a location that you can guarantee will not be exposed to water. If, like me, you don't have a spot in your bathroom that is 100% water-free, then maybe you should pass on this scale (and presumably Tanita's other electronic scales, they didn't seem to think this was an unreasonable expectation on their part).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not User-friendly as a Weight Only Scale
I bought this scale for the whole family to weight themselves, and thought it would be nice to have body fat monitoring capability for two people. It turns out this scale is not designed for that purpose. The reasons are

1. Turning on the scale is not intuitive.
There is no on/off button.Without instrution, it's hard to figure out how to turn on the scale.

2. Each time one weights oneself, he/she has to go through the turning on process.
If two people want to weight themselves right after each other, or if one person wants to weight oneself again right after the last use, they will have to go through the process of turning it on again, which takes time.

Other than that, the scale is accurate and Tanita do have great customer service.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is more a question than a review
I just receive this scale today. So far I would say it is rather easy to setup and the weight is at least consistent and I hope it is accurate. However, it is only allowed to store up to two people's personal data which is kind of annoying when there are three people in my household. And there is no short-cut way to use the scale without entering personal data.
Now my biggest question is how the body fat is calculated. Even though the reading is consistent each time, when I switch my personal data from male to female, just to play around with the scale, my body fat suddenly jump from 14.5% to 26% even though my weight reading, height and age remain the same. Either the calculation is way off or the formula it used is gender-dependent, hopefully it is the latter. Anyone has an idea? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks good, but sorry to say, it's just not
I purchased this scale some time ago and have, from the first been disappointed. We never use it. It just sits on the bathroom floor, taking up space and offering us the opportunity to stubb our toes.

Depending on whether I shift my weight toward my heels or toes, the reading varies as much as 12 pounds, which is, in my case is a 4%, difference. This seems a rather large variance and it makes it impossible to use this scale as part of any weight-loss program.

When we first got it I sent the company a letter asking for a replacement (I had already exchanged it once at the store), to which I never received a reply. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lack of Quality Control
I recently bought this scale for my family. It arrived damaged and would not operate at all.I contacted the manufacturer who referred me to the seller. The seller replaced the unit but the second one arrived damaged as well.It worked once and then never worked again.I returned that to the seller and requested a refund. It may be accurate; if you get one that works right out of the box.My experience is that I wouldn't give them a third try.

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner!
I received this scale several days ago.It is remarkably consistent in its readings.Easy to read; attractive design.

5-0 out of 5 stars So far so great
I ordered this scale on November 27th, and with Super Saver shiping, I expected it to take at least 7-10 days to arrive. It arrived on November 30th.It was almost ready to use as soon as I removed it from the box.I weighed myself 3 times, consecutively, and it was exactly the same every time.It seems to be very sturdy, and is also not bad to look at (for a scale).I would recommend this scale to any of my family or friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent scale
I had looked at the reviews and saw that the Tanita scales overall did very well. So I purchased a cheaper Tanita scale (model HD 327) at first, assuming that all the Tanita scales were reliable, but I was wrong.. I sent back the lower quality model because it was flimsy and not very accurate.. But I decided to give Tanita a second chance and purchased this model the HD 372. It is extremely acccurate, very sturdy, and well made. It is also very attractive.. The blue back lit display is very readable even if you use it in the morning without your contact lenses or glasses on. It uses two different batteries, a nine volt for the blue backlight and a lithium battery for the digital readout. So you could leave out the nine volt battery if you didn't want to use the light.. I've tested the accuracy by weighing known weights, such as free weights with it and it's always accurate. You can't go wrong with this scale.

4-0 out of 5 stars HD372 Tanita Scale
I needed a scale that was accurate and easy to read. This Tanita scale is great.I weighed myself three times in a roll, and received the exact weight each time.Weight is shown in pounds and ounces.Amazon.com makes iteasy to order from, no tax and shipping cost is a big plus!!I have bought severial different brands of scales in the past, all were worthless, not accurate and broke in a short time of use.I have a friend that purchased a Tanita scales and is very pleased. In fact he was the one that advised me to buy a Tanita Scale. It was good advise, i'm glad I took it. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Introducing RESPeRATE, the interactive breathing device used by thousands of men and woman nationwide to gain control over high blood pressure. Used for just 15 minutes a few times a week, RESPeRATE delivers a significant all-day blood pressure reduction.

The Power to Lower Blood Pressure
Proven in Seven Clinical Trials
Within 4 to 6 weeks of use, a significant, all day reduction in blood pressure can be achieved.
it in action
RESPeRATE is a portable, computerized electronic device that guides you through sessions of interactive, therapeutic breathing powerful enough to lower blood pressure.

Using a breathing sensor, RESPeRATE automatically analyzes your individual breathing pattern and creates a personalized melody composed of two distinct inhale and exhale guiding tones, delivered through comfortable earphones.

Simply listen to the melody through the headphones and synchronize your breathing to the tones. By prolonging the exhalation tone RESPeRATE guides you to slow your breathing and reach the "therapeutic zone" of less than 10 breaths per minute.

The physiological result? The muscles surrounding the small blood vessels in your body dilate, and relax. Blood is allowed to flow more freely, and pressure is directly, significantly lowered.

Breathing with RESPeRATE makes the difference
Scientific evidence has shown that structured therapeutic breathing, if performed without an effort or particular concentration, can significantly lower your blood pressure. However, these effortless therapeutic breathing sessions are difficult to perform on your own without years of training or continuous, individualized coaching. That is why RESPeRATE was developed.

To deliver effortless therapeutic breathing without any prior training, RESPeRATE utilizes a patented "Interactive Respiratory Pacing" technology, which ingeniously takes advantage of the body's natural tendency to follow external rhythms.

Three Easy Steps

Step 1: The respiration sensor monitors your breathing.

Step 2: The RESPeRATE computerized unit composes a personalized melody with prolonged inhale and exhale guiding tones.

Step 3: Simply listen to the melody through the headphones and synchronize your breathing.

By prolonging the exhalation tone RESPeRATE guides you to slow your breathing and reach the "therapeutic zone" of less than 10 breaths per minute.

it in action
And while your breathing returns to normal after each session with RESPeRATE, the beneficial impact on your blood pressure is cumulative. Bottom line: with regular use of RESPeRATE, measurable, sustained reduction in blood pressure is achieved.

Who Should Use RESPeRATE
Whether you are already taking anti-hypertension medication or still trying to lower blood pressure with diet and exercise, RESPeRATE might just be the tool you need.

Seven clinical trials repeatedly found RESPeRATE to be safe and effective for people with high blood pressure, either medicated or unmedicated, male or female, younger and older.

One particular study, published in American Journal of Hypertension, even found that RESPeRATE delivered significant blood pressure reductions for people who had uncontrolled blood pressure despite taking three or more medications at maximum dosage.

RESPeRATE Contents:
RESPeRATE device, respiration sensor, headphones, user manual, training video, 4 AA batteries.

Please Note: RESPeRATE should only be used as part of your overall health program for achieving blood pressure goals, as recommended by your doctor. RESPeRATE can be safely used in conjunction with medication and lifestyle modification such as diet and exercise.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first week - Love it.
1. It's an eligible expense in my Flexible Spending Account, or I would not have spent the money. Or at least not as easily. 2. If you have a personality like me, such a relaxation tool suits my routine-driven life. 3. I use it at work and in my commute to work. Easy to just be aware of my breath and still do other things. Good coping skills when I need them - traffic and work stress. 4. I've seen time and time again, taking blood pressure at different breathing rates and different thoughts in mind - makes a huge difference. 5. I'm in more control than I acknowledged. Allowing frenzy is a choice too. Choose differently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Consider the cost of medications as well
My blood pressure gradually crept up over the years, and the diagnosis of "labile hypertension" changed to simply "hypertension." Saw this device online, and decided to give it a try. It has made the difference between starting medication and not having to take one.

Yes, this IS pricey. But so was the non-generic medication my cardiologist was considering. I have prescription drug coverage, but copayments quickly add up, especially for non-generic. So, I bought the Resperate, knowing I could try it and return it if I didn't like it and/or it didn't have the desired effect.

But overall, I do like it--a lot. And it has had a beneficial effect on my blood pressure. After less than two weeks using this, at my next MD visit I learned that my systolic blood pressure (top number) had dropped 14 points, the diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) had dropped 3 points.

When the Resperate arrived, I was a little overwhelmed, so I asked a techie person to walk me through the set up. Turns out it was a LOT easier than I'd anticipated.

The basic premise is that blood pressure can be changed by breathing more slowly and deeply. This little machine actually "analyzes" your breathing pattern in the here and now. It first "senses" where you are using feedback from the sensor on an elastic belt, then gives you immediate feedback (initially through the screen, then through the melody) about how to slow your breathing, breath by breath. The default time for a training session is 15 minutes. The goal, however, is to accumulate 45 minutes of EFFECTIVE breath training per WEEK. (Effective is defined as breathing fewer than 10 times per minute.) The manual states that while your breathing will return to a higher rate, the positive mpact on your sympathetic nervous system carries over.

Scheduling the use of the Resperate into my routine as part of bedtime preparation has worked best for me. Initially I used it every night to help establish its use as a habit. Using the Resperate is relaxing; I also find I sleep more deeply on the nights I use it.

I did try the different "melodies"--there are five to choose from. I like three. (One of them I found irritating, another was so-so.)

NOTE: There is a statistics function that can provide detailed info, but if more than one person uses the device, the stats would be meaningless. I would like to see the manufacturer add a user 1, user 2 option. It seems unreasonable to have to buy a separate device for each user in a household, but that is what you would have to do if you planned to use the statistics function with more than one user.

A word of caution for those with pets, small children or grandchildren: Don't leave this out, with its tempting cords and elastic belt! The manufacturer suggests stuffing the cords and belt into the device. I found this tiresome, since the cords tended to tangle. However, the headphones do store well on the device itself. A gallon size freezer bag is easier to use. This will keep those tempting cords away from inquisitive pets. Or just put it back into the box or store it in the drawer of your bedside table.

BOTTOM LINE: Buy this only if you are willing to put in both the time and the effort required to see results. That translates into roughly an hour a week for at least a month--for the buy/keep decision--and 45 minutes a week indefinitely. Also, keep the receipt in case you find it isn't right for you, for whatever reason.

Another reviewer pointed out that using this device is, in effect, meditation. That's true. I've used meditation CDs--including one specifically on meditation through breathing. They were helpful. But in my experience, none of them have been as easy and as foolproof to use as this device.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the body but a bit expensive
I gave it five stars because this device facilites states common to MEDITATION, but I probably shouldn't say things like MEDITATION here, because then you guys might go and look up things like MEDITATION and realize that Meditation, is free and you don't need 290 dollars to do it.

However, if you bought this device and say a book on meditation well then you'd really be set. Especially if your still green to the concept. Thomas Cleary is the King.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpected benefits!
I bought the RESPeRATE as a preventative to a slightly elevated BP reading in January. It did exactly what is was supposed to do - it decreased my PB significantly (13 pts) within a few weeks. But the other effect I noticed was a general feeling of well-being and increased positive outlook on life. There is considerable evidence now that mindfulness training has positive temporary and possibly permanent effects on brain function (see http://psyphz.psych.wisc.edu/).Using the RESPeRATE seems to be having this effect for me as well.As a mental health professional, it is critical that my mind and body be in an optimal state so that my patients can achieve a similar state within themselves.Congratulations to InterCure for making such a terrific device.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works if you work at it...
I recently reviewed the medical literature and there are several proven therapies (other than prescription medications) for treatment of hypertension. This machine is one of those therapies.

The most effective therapy for lowering blood pressure without medication is walking (working up to 15 to 20 miles a week...less than 10 miles a week has little effect). For more on the new minimum recommendations about walking, visit the new government sponsored food pyramid and carefull read the recommendations about exercise...the new guidelines differ greatly from the old "20 or 30 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week (a recipe for obesity and hypertension):http://www.mypyramid.gov.

In addition to walking, proven therapies (greatly reduced in effectiveness compared with walking) include a vegetarian diet as well as several supplements (garlic and CoQ-10 are two of several) that also may benefit.

Working in synergy, a dramatic and effective lowering of blood pressure can be obtained.Use this machine in conjunction with a daily walk (with your doctor's permission) of 3 miles (7 days a week) and with a diet as recommended in "The Abs Diet" and it would be difficult to keep from lowering your blood pressure.

I do have patients who were helped; those who were not helped made no other real changes.Use this machine without any other changes in lifestyle, and I doubt that you will see a worthwile result.

The device is very relaxing to use.I recommend that you walk during the day and use this device as an afternoon refreshment for energy or before bedtime to improve sleep (as well as help for blood pressure). But, don't waste your money if you're not willing to walk at least 15 miles a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic thermometer, lasted for years of daily temping.
I've been using this thermometer for years for charting purposes and for my two children. It's lasted (on the initial battery) since December 2000 until now (February 2004) with daily temp checks for charting. The continuous beep while temping let's you know that it is working, but it's not too loud to wake a sleeping spouse next to you (or a very tired/feverish child). My 8 year old like to be able to take and read his own temperature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun way to measure the heat!
Okay, I confess. I take my temperature often for no reason because I like to hear it beep while in my mouth and then see I am a normal 98.6 degrees a living healthy person.

Oh, yeah, the other great thing about the beeping thermometer is that if you are sick and taking your temperature everybody knows it from the sound of the beeping and you get instant sympathy.

This thermometer is very easy and simple to use just press a button for the digital display to come up and stick it in your mouth. Once in your mouth it will begin beeping and give a long beep to indicate it has finished. Remove and check the display for temperature.

The memory will hold the last temperature taken if you need to reference that number.

Get well soon or have fun checking,
girldiver:)

The thermometer came just in time for our little one to come down with a fever. Taking a squirmy temp is no fun, but when we told her to be still and listen for the ""beeps,"" she quieted right down and laughed when it was ""all done."" Now both little ones ask if they need their ""beep-beep."" The thermometer was fast and accurate and the beep lets you know it's working properly. Great thermometer and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

This thermometer has a lot going for it. It's unbreakable -- definitely a big plus! You don't have to shake it down, which some people have problems with (especially older people with less flexible wrists). And the beeping lets you know that it's working properly and when it's done. My only complaint is that it reads out only in Fahrenheit -- I take a thermometer when I travel and telling a pharmacist your temperature anywhere else needs to be done in Centigrade. (In fairness, most glass thermometers don't read out in both either.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pricey but good weights
I just recently started lifting weights on a regular basis. At first, I just used cheap weights that required constant changing for different exercises and I found myself spending more time tightening and loosening bolts than doing the actual exercises. The Select-tech dumbbells are much nicer. You simply turn two dials, located at each end of the dumbbell, to the weight you want. Then lift and the proper weight comes with the bar. Some people have complained about the bar being too long and the maximum limit of 52.5 lbs being too little. The length seems perfectly fine to me, it hasn't gotten in the way for any of the exercises I've done. The weight limit is also fine for me as a beginner, although you'll obviously want to look somewhere else if 52.5 lbs is too light for you. I don't really have any complaints except for the price and the fragile feel. I haven't actually dropped them so I don't know for sure how durable they are but the material doesn't seem like it would hold up well if dropped multiple times. The $350 price tag also seems a little steep for what you get. Overall, I recommend this product to anyone who isn't a seasoned weight lifter and can afford the $350.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I've only had Select-Tech Dumbbells a week, so I can't comment on their longevity or how they hold up to repeated workouts, only my initial impressions.

So far, I am very pleased with how they feel when doing every type of dumbbell exercise.Due to the mechanism that holds the plates in place, using a lighter weight still requires the overall length of the dumbbell to be the same.Because of that, I was expecting an awkward feel, but that is not the case.My wife uses 5 - 12.5 pound settings and the extra length is a non-factor for her as well.We also have a small workout room, so the space saving benefit is a plus.

As advertised, just turn the dial and select your weight. It's that easy.I have found myself doing proper sets now, where before I didn't want to hassle with changing plates. It also speeds up the workout.

They are expensive, but worth the money if you plan on sticking to a routine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh, so close.
Select Tech Dumbbells are the same things whether they are credited to Nautilus or Bowflex or both. The reason I really wanted these: space. Space is premium: not because I don't have room but because I like things as small as possible as a matter of policy (which is probably why I have room).

More Good: 1) They are well made: a) good quality plastic covered metal; b) the locking mechanism is sturdy and seems like it will last. 2) The only wear-and-tear issue I see is the plastic coating itself. You *will* eventually get slide marks from constantly sliding the unit in and out of the base. I predict these will be cosmetic only. 3) The weight increment is 2.5 pounds through the lower half and 5 pounds through the upper half.

The Bad: 1) Cost, but a full set of dumbbells to cover the entire range these offer and a rack to hold them wouldn't be cheap either. 2) If you workout to muscle failure, guiding the dumbbells back into the rack can be troublesome. 3) (Why I returned mine:) The dumbbells are long enough to prevent *me* from ideal form during exercises using both dumbbells in close proximity: upright rows, bicep curls, etc. Depending on your build, YMMV. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and accurate
I have a history of hypertension and I found recently that my blood pressure had risen again in spite of a better diet and weight loss.I decided to buy this monitor to check the effect of other changes to my diet on my blood pressure in between doctor visits. This monitor was very easy to use and accurate.I make a check of my blood pressure daily and am very satisfied with the results. The unit itself arrived quickly and with no problems. The only thing I would recommend is for the user to measure his or her own bicep. If it's between 13 and 16 inches, you may need to order the Large Adult Arm Cuff.(The Standard cuff is the one included.)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I have had 3 blood pressure cuffs. This one is the best.It stores measurements including pulse.Wrist cuffs are a waste of money and can give you inaccurate information.Bicep cuffs are the best.Omron has a very good reputation among health professionals.

A word of caution, you need to use the cuff properly and to always use it the same way.It is also important to take severalmeasurements (2 a day) when you are measuring trends. And you need to average the results for 4-5 days.

If you do this you can manage your blood pressure through a combination of drugs, exercise and diet.A good set of records will allow you to measure your progress. For example, if you want to know the benefit of an exercise program (benefit in reducing BP) you can measure this. The same is true of low sodium diet.

This cuff is very good and with the AC adapter you can make many meausrements and depend on the consistency of the measurement if not the accuracy.Consistency is important.

Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent device
I looked at numerous devices before settling on this one because it seemed easy to use (and I don't need another watch). I calibrated it against manually reading my pulse and found it to be accurate. To use, place your first finger on the sensor, stay calm (!), then click the button. Wiggling will destroy the reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for taking resting heart rate in the morning
The 6102 works well for getting my resting heart rate first thing in the morning. The display is large enough to read without reading glasses, too.I have not tried using it during exercise, as I already have a Polar HRM.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Buy
For the price, this is a good item. When readings were compared to a more expensive brand and the gym equipment it was accurate. Only drawback is, you will get an error reading if you are in the midst of strenuous activity that prevents you from being still enough for it to register, but still a good buy for under $50.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surest Way to Your Heart
I've had one for a couple of years and use it to track my heart rate in a Winter Conditioning class for cyclists. It's much handier than the ones that require a strap. It also doesn't get interference from other heart monitors - in my class, those with the strap-type monitors have to position their bikes (stationary) just so to avoid picking up stray beats. I've compared its results to those on treadmills, etc., and it's consistent with what it reports for my heart rate. My only complaint is that the battery is prone to dislocate itself, and I have to open the back and reposition it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not to impressed
Works about a third of the time. I have gone back to measuring the old fashion way (finger on the neck.) ... Read more
