This device might look like a scale, but it presents a broader snapshot of personal health by not only determining weight, but estimating body fat as well. It does this by sending a safe, imperceptible, low-level electrical pulse (50 kHz) through the body. (Healthcare professionals use similar electrical-pulse devices to estimate body fat by what is known as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, or BIA.) The device operates on four AA batteries (included), and its digital screen displays body-fat readings in 0.1 percent increments and weight in either0.2 pound increments, up to 300 pounds or 136 kg.

The scale stores data for two users and a simple toe-tap calls up your data before stepping on the device. Within seconds, it displays your weight, followed by an estimate of body-fat percentage. Both will repeat before the device turns off automatically. Durable and easy to maintain, the device carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars If you have small feet BEWARE of this scale!
I have relatively small feet (size 5.5 shoes). For an accurate measure on this scale, either weight or body fat, you need to have full contact of your feet on both the front and back sensors.I've found that impossible due to the size of the scale compared to the size of my feet.So if you have small feet you might want to look for another model/brand.

I've also found that the body fat % is fairly inaccurate and tends to fluctuate even during the day. After some research, I discovered that most people find their weight to be closest to "true" weight if they weigh first thing in the morning and their body fat % to be closest to the "true" % when they weigh last thing at night. It seems that the body fat % varies according to how hydrated your body is...and evening weighs (greater hydration than in the morning) seem to be more accurate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scale Works Well -- If You Bother to Follow the Directions
Anyone who peruses the reviews for this scale will see that users give high marks for measuring pounds, but mixed marks on measuring body fat percentage. If people bother to read the directions that come with the scale, they will see warnings not to use the body fat feature on first waking up in the morning, since the body is dehydrated at this time and the measurement will be skewed. Also, the directions also suggest that people should pick a consistent time of day to use the body fat scale and that this time should reflect a consistent, stable body state -- i.e., no extremes in hydration, over or underabundance of food, etc. When used by these guidelines, the body fat reading will provide consistent readings that will allow you to track increases and decreases in body fat percentage.I can't say for certain that the percentage on the screen is 100% accurate, since the methods scientists use to measure body fat accurately are expensive, time consuming and not convenient on a daily basis. What I can say, if used properly you will get fairly good baseline figure and a good accurate track of the upward and downward movement of your body fat percentage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this BF680
I've had this scale for a few months now, and I'm very impressed with it.Like most people have said, it is very accurate for weight.I use it every day (for the past few months) and I can tell you that this scale has been ridiculously consistent.Because it is accurate, I can be confident in any progress I make.

It is easy to setup, it only took a few minutes to put in my information and it saves it.

Measuring your bodyfat and/or weight are both quick and easy.Just get on the scale and wait 5 seconds.

There are buttons that you flick with your toe before getting on.They are big and easy to depress.

It has the option for weight only if you don't want to get your bodyfat percentage.

It stores your previous weight and bodyfat measurement. After you get a new weight and bodyfat measurement, you can press the little "up" arrow button to get your previous measurments.

The bodyfat % feature gets a bum rap because as you know most people don't bother to read the instruction manual. It's true that actual % fluctuates depending on when you measure yourself. The variance in a day for me is about 2%, BUT, it's because your not supposed to measure your bodyfat in the morning.

The manual says that you should wait a) 3 hours after waking up, b) 3 hours after eating, and c) 3 hours after excercise before measuring your bodyfat using the scale. The best time for me then is after I get home from work and before I go to the gym.At the same time of the day, assuming I hadn't eating anything within the few hours before getting home, the scale gives me a CONSISTENT reading on my bodyfat percentage (which is always lower than when I wake up). When I measure myself in the morning, my bodyfat is CONSISTENTLY 2% higher, but I know this is wrong because you're not supposed to measure your bodyfat until 3 hours after you wake up.

The bottom line. After following the instructions, I have found the bodyfat measurements to be fairly consistent. The weight measurements are extremely consistent.

This isn't a cheap piece of machinery, this is a high quality device. For this reason I would highly recommend it.

(and as for people complaining about the athlete mode.Stop pretending you're an "athlete" by Tanita's definition. An "athlete" would be a person who is physically active in excercise for 10 or more hours a week.If you excercise a lot, but not 10 hours, and do some recreational sports, you are not going to use "athlete mode".I would think that a college or professional athlete, maybe even high school might be able to use this "athlete" mode if they had a practice every day and/or games making up the 10+ hours a week.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly imprecise body fat measurements
This scale has two modes, one for athletes and one for non-athletes.My experience using this scale on individuals at a variety of fitness levels indicates that these two modes give body fat readings that differ by about 7 percentage points on the same individual at the same time (e.g., a reading of 10% body fat in athlete mode, but a reading of 17% body fat in non-athlete mode). It stands to reason that as a person, through an intense exercise program, makes the transition from being a "non-athlete" to being an "athlete", the body fat reading will, of necessity, be off by at least 3.5 percentage points either immediately before or immediately after he/she changes categories (since a person's actual body fat will not make instantaneous jumps). And, of course, this small number of percentage points corresponds to a relative error of 30 or 40% or more.It seems to me that many, if not most, people could just guess their body fat with more accuracy than that.Yes, this scale seems to do fine at measuring weight, but there are a lot cheaper ways of getting accurate weight measurements.

If you're considering starting a new exercise and diet program to improve your fitness:great! You will almost certainly not regret the work you put into such a program. If you're considering this body fat monitor as a substantial aid for you in this program, think again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent health tool
I am one of the few lightweights out there actually trying to gain weight. I want to gain lean muscle mass, and not fat. This scale helps me easily keep track of my progress.

I have heard a few people complain about the accuracy of the fat % measurment on this scale. Accurate or not, I have found it to be incredibly consistent. Weighing myself three times in a row will yield the same percent each time.

If I follow the instructions and weigh myself before meals, etc, over the course of the week I can accurately determine if I am going up or down. What an incredible health tool. I wish I would have known about this years ago! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, excellent product
The Omron HBF-306 is very simple to use. Because it uses electrical resitance and calculated "wing span" to measure BF%, it's possible (due to differences in arm length) that your reading may not be 100% accurate compared to a clinical "immersion" test. However, it is definitely consistent! I also have caliper type pinchers and found them too inconsistent (unless you can pinch the same exact spot each time).

With the Omron HBF-306, you can easily track changes in your body fat % as you progress through your fitness training. You'll be able to easily tell if your losing fat and/or gaining muscle by monitoring your BF% along with your weight. Check your weight and body fat % first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings. I highly recommend it.

Tanita calls this scale the Family Model, designed for adults, kids and the athletes of the family. A setting on this scale lets you differentiate between all three so the readings given are accurate from the weight to the percentage of body fat. It includes a memory recall that lets you keep track of any gains or losses for up to four people so you never have to write it down or try to remember from one time to the next. It even tells you whether or not your weight is considered healthy or not. For guests that visit, there's also a button for them so there's no confusing their weight results with yours. Another innovative feature, unique to this scale, is the Daily Calorie Intake mode that estimates how many calories should be consumed in a 24-hour period in order to maintain your current weight, assisting you in your dietary planning for the day's meals. The digital display is large and easy to read. Operates on four "AA" batteries (included). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great piece of equipment, but you MUST be careful when using
I have been using this scale for 3 months to track my weight/fat level as I try to drop a little fat and gain some muscle by working out often. I have been using the scale in the morning and everning almost every day to smooth out any irregularities in measurements, and I've learned a lot about the scale in the process. According to the scale, in the last 3 months, I've gained 2 lbs of fat and 11 lbs of lean mass (hopefully I can use all that new muscle to burn that fat back off!).

First, it seems to be very consistent. I have watched my weight gradually increase and if I eat a meal shortly before weighing myself, I weigh unusually high, and if I do extra cardio work and don't eat as much in a day, that evening my fat % will be lower than usual.

In addition to those kinds of effects, I weigh an average of 1.5 pounds more in the evening and my fat level is 2.6% higher in the morning. All these facts point out that consistency in measurements is CRITICAL if you want your results to mean anything. If you want to weigh yourself once a week, you must be very careful that the conditions are the same.

I highly recommend weighing yourself regularly and averaging values. That's what I'm doing and I find my results much more useful than occasional weighing. For example, last week my lowest weight in the evening was 182.6 and the highest was 187. Similar things happen with fat percentages. Last week I varied between 11.2% and 14.9% in the evenings. Those numbers make the scale sound inconsistent, but I have been graphing weekly averages, and the trends have been very consistent. My weight has been up 1.5-2.5 lbs every week, and fat% is changing no more than 0.5% from one week to the next and it's staying in a narrow range (13-14).

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't change a thing. I highly recommend these scales. It would be great if once a week or once a month testing on expensive equipment was adequate, but unless you are making huge changes, day to day fluctuations will make results hard to interpret. Using a scale like this will help to give you meaningful, week to week results. It's been a big help in keeping me motivated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tanita BF682 Body Fat Scale
I am disappointed in this scale because of the inaccuracy with the body fat monitor.I had purchased a Health-o-meter just a week before and returned it because we thought the body fat percentage was way off. So I had heard Tanita was very good, and went ahead and purchased this with Amazon. My husband, son and daughter all show low body fat, and all are thin and fit people, so I guess it's accurate. But when I get on the scale, my body fat % is showing 32%.When I had mine done professionally at our local college gym, it was 22%.I am a 43 year old women who works out every day lifting weights and doing aerobics.I am 5'9" and weigh 146.The problem is, when I get on the scale using my husband's setting, my body fat % reading is 13%.He is 6 feet tall and weighs 166.So why is that?Is it just taking some calculation based on my settings? It looks at my age, height and weight and thinks "middle aged woman" hmm, 32%.That's what is seems like, anyhow.I thought it was based on the electronic component that actually measures your body composition.Maybe I was just uninformed, but, this just doesn't seem right.I gave three stars because the weight seems to be correct for all 4 members of my family, and I like that it is consistent and gives readings to the nearest two-tenths.It also stores the last reading.

I recommend everyone get their body composition done at a gym like I did.It was inexpensive, quick and easy. Then you'll know for sure.Save some money and get a scale that gives weight only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tanita BF682 is a great scale - consistent and dependable.
For years I weighed myself with a Health-O-Meter scale and "guessed" at my weight. I would pop on the scale, get off and allow it to reset, pop back on and find my weight would vary usually by 1-3 pounds. But once by 20 pounds!

After much frustration I decided to invest in the Tanita BF682. The BF682 is a sturdy attractive metal and plastic scale with some great features. After I purchased it I put it on a level surface (rugs are a no-no) and weighed myself about 10 times in a row not giving the scale a chance to reset. To my pleasure I weighed the exact same each time right down to .2 of a pound!

The scale has several buttons in the front that you tap with your foot to program in up to four family members height, weight, activity level and age. When you step on the scale you will get a read out with your weight and body fat. In order to ensure an accurate bodyfat measurement, you should weigh at the same time each afternoon (not first thing in the morning as you are not hydrated) in your bare feet. There is also a "guest" button so a guest can get a bodyfat and weight reading and a weigh only button that will give weight only.

Tanita works by sending a small electrical current through your body to read your bodyfat. You do not experience any discomfort at all, but those with a pacemaker should not use it as the electrical current may interfere with the operation of the pacemaker. After it has read your body fat the scale will give you the number and also a small icon will tell you if you are underfat, healthy, overfat or obese.

One super nice thing about this scale is the DCI or daily caloric intake. That's right! Along with your bodyfat and weight, this scale is so smart it will also tell you how many calories you are consuming to weigh what you do. If you want to beef up - eat more calories than the number shown and if you want to skinny down - eat less. Very motivational.

The scale operates on 4 double A batteries that are included as are easy to follow directions.

If you are looking for a bodyfat, daily caloric intake and weight scale this is an excellent scale. In April 2005, however, Tanita is set to release a new set of scales called Innerscan. These will vary in features but may monitor body functions such as water %, bone mass, muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, metabolic age and daily calorie intake along with weight and body fat depending on the model you choose. Starting price will only be about $10 more so you many want to check into those models also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad experience with this purchase
I bought one BF682 and two BF792 for holiday gifts while they have promotion on Tanita.Unfortunately, I received all three scales were opened box.

The BF682 is work properly but the bottom on top is not that smooth when pressed, so I requested for exchange. The exchanged one is opened box either and it has the same problem as the first one.

Two BF792 have problems with the fat %.I've tried 15 times on the first one, only 3 times showed the fat %, they are 8%, 18% & 23%.I've tired 10 times on the second one, none of them showed the fat %.Of course, I requested for exchange. The exchanged scales are also opened box. They work fine although the bottom is not smooth.

Since I have no time to buy another gifts, therefore, I keep all three opened box scales.I was extremely angry and disappointed with this purchase.Amazon, do you have quality control on all stuffs that you sale? From this bad experience, I am scare to buy electronic from Amazon again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps you motivated
My wife got this scale for me for Father's Day.I was interested in knowing my body fat percentage so that I could track my progress over time. What I hadn't counted on is that this regular feedback is a great motivator for meeting your personal goals.Since the scale is accurate to 0.2lb and 0.1% body fat, you can see the impact of small changes to your eating or workout habits. As a result, I have made faster progress in achieving my goals than I had thought was possible.

This was a wonderful investment. ... Read more

How much of your body weight comes from fat and how much from lean muscle? This scale lets you know so that you can make choices to improve and monitor your health. Tanika has patented a precise, easy way to use the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) method at home. Simply enter your personal data using the ‘set,’ ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons, and then stand barefoot on the scale. Electrodes in the foot sensor pads send a low-level electrical current through the body which measures the percentage of body fat. How? The current passes quickly through muscle and is slowed by fat.

One or two users can program the scale with their following personal data: age, height, and male or female. A switch on the back lets the user choose metric, imperial, or stones/pounds. The large one-line digital display shows weight followed by body fat percentage, and indicates whether the user is underfat, healthy, overfat, or obese. A chart included in the instruction booklet shows appropriate ranges of fat percentage for age and gender. A ‘guest’ button allows one-time readings without reprogramming one of the two memory stores. The weight capacity of this scale is 300 pounds (136 kilograms; 21 stones/6 pounds).

The scale, white with metallic foot pads, measures 11-1/2 by 12 by 2 inches and should be used on a hard, level, dry floor. Four AA batteries (included) are required for operation. The monitor is intended for adults (up to age 99) and children (age 7 and older) who lead inactive or moderately active lifestyles. The body fat monitor is not intended for use by pregnant women, people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic medical devices, professional athletes, or bodybuilders. Body fat percentage estimates may vary from day to day due to hydration changes from alcohol consumption, menstruation, illness, and other such factors. Readings taken at the same time everyday under consistent conditions will be most accurate. Tanita covers this scale with a three-year warranty. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Can't beat the accuracy
I am very surprised by the accuracy this scale can achieve.I had an analog bathroom scale for a long time, and I was often disappointed by the constantly changing readings (+/- 5 pounds). For the tanita, accuracy has never been a problem since I bought it.I have seen some complaints about inaccurate reading on uneven surface, but I have never met this problem.I use it mainly on hard kitchen ground.

The body fat monitor is fun, but I don't really care about it.You can just ignore it after taking your weight. The procedure taking weight is fairly straightforward, as the weight is independent on the age setting etc (the body fat reading does).

Overall it is a very fine product.A++

3-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent; OK if you only want general idea of bodyfat/wt
The scale is inconsistent. The only thing it is consistent about is its inconsistency.Often, I would weigh myself and get a reading of, say, 23% body fat. Then I would weigh myself an hour later and get 20% body fat.I understand that a person's weight fluctuates throughout the day, but I sincerely doubt a person's body fat fluctuates throughout the day (not to mention hour by hour). Also, I have tried weighing myself at the exact same time each day so as to give the scale a fighting chance w/ regard to the normal day-to-day body fluctuations...and there is STILL inconsistency...not by a pound or two or a percentage or two...but sometimes even by 5 lbs.

If you just want a general idea of what your weight and body fat is, go w/ this scale. If you're a person like me who is trying to lose a small amount of weight (therefore making accurate readings very important) then do your research and go for a better model.

1-0 out of 5 stars Major flaw - Beware!
I bought this scale a year ago and was very happy with the accuracy and the body fat measurement feature.Unfortunately I can't recommend it because it is not durable under real world conditions.I was cleaning my shower one day and accidentally left the glass door open a crack and a fine spray of water landed on it.Of course I wiped it off and then turned it on to make sure it was ok, but one of the buttons wouldn't work.I thought "no big deal", I'll just let it dry out and it will work again. That never happened, it's permanently broken.Since you need to use the buttons in order to activate it, I can't use it properly anymore.I called Tanita to see about getting it fixed under warranty, but they say that it's not a defect because I let it get wet.Well I checked the manual, and it doesn't say that the scale should not be exposed to water, somehow I was supposed to magically infer this.Obviously it's electronic and you don't want to submerge or drown it, but it seems to me that an appliance which lives in the bathroom should be able to handle the occasional splash of water.

According to the Tanita rep I spoke with, the scale should not be exposed to water in any way, even when you wipe it to clean it (I asked how you are supposed to clean it without getting it wet, I was being difficult).I don't know how they realistically expect anyone to achieve 100% dryness in a bathroom setting, where every activity you do involves water.Their recommendation was to move it to another room with no water - not exactly practical for most people.Needless to say, if you are considering this scale for your bathroom I highly recommend you make sure you have a location that you can guarantee will not be exposed to water. If, like me, you don't have a spot in your bathroom that is 100% water-free, then maybe you should pass on this scale (and presumably Tanita's other electronic scales, they didn't seem to think this was an unreasonable expectation on their part).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not User-friendly as a Weight Only Scale
I bought this scale for the whole family to weight themselves, and thought it would be nice to have body fat monitoring capability for two people. It turns out this scale is not designed for that purpose. The reasons are

1. Turning on the scale is not intuitive.
There is no on/off button.Without instrution, it's hard to figure out how to turn on the scale.

2. Each time one weights oneself, he/she has to go through the turning on process.
If two people want to weight themselves right after each other, or if one person wants to weight oneself again right after the last use, they will have to go through the process of turning it on again, which takes time.

Other than that, the scale is accurate and Tanita do have great customer service.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is more a question than a review
I just receive this scale today. So far I would say it is rather easy to setup and the weight is at least consistent and I hope it is accurate. However, it is only allowed to store up to two people's personal data which is kind of annoying when there are three people in my household. And there is no short-cut way to use the scale without entering personal data.
Now my biggest question is how the body fat is calculated. Even though the reading is consistent each time, when I switch my personal data from male to female, just to play around with the scale, my body fat suddenly jump from 14.5% to 26% even though my weight reading, height and age remain the same. Either the calculation is way off or the formula it used is gender-dependent, hopefully it is the latter. Anyone has an idea? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Inaccurate
Beware, this scale weighs you approximately 4-5 pounds more than the scale you are probably using now.Even body fat was extremely high.

My normal scale weighed me within 1 pound of my doctor's scale.I wanted the body fat option as well. After stepping off the Tanita and on to my original scale, I immediately lost 5 pounds.

Still, the weight tracker is convenient and it looks nice/sturdy.

A class above basic scales, the Tanita family scale and body fat monitor delivers a more informed and complete picture of your physical well-being. It does this by calculating body fat percentage using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, a safe low-level transmission of an electrical signal through the body. Each time you use the scale, it displays your current weight and body fat percentage on the easy-to-read, 2-line LED monitor. In addition, it can show recent readings and recommended caloric intake, as well as compare your readings to a healthy range. Tanita's calculations adjust for age, gender, height, and fitness level, and the scale can keep track of profiles and readings for up to four users at a time. Visitors can use the "guest" button, and anyone can choose to display weight only.

Using the scale requires a moderate amount of initial programming and simple toe-tap operation afterwards. Readings are in 0.2-pound (0.1 kg) increments and 0.1% gradations. With a 330-pound (150-kg) capacity, the unit is suitable for ages 7-99 and body types ranging from inactive to athletic. It is not suitable for pregnant women, professional athletes and bodybuilders, or people with pacemakers. The scale runs on four AA batteries, which Tanita includes. It measures 12-1/4 by 11-3/4 by 1-3/4 inches. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and accurate weight; directional indication of fat
I've been using the BF681 since early January and it has worked well for me.The body fat monitor does not claim to provide the same accuracy and precision of, say, water immersion ("hydrodensitometry") or caliper measurements, but it can provide an indication of the direction you're heading from week to week, which is useful information for dieters. If your goal is to precisely know your % body fat, then you should shop for a set of calipers (though good ones can be expensive). If your goal is to monitor your weight loss to make sure you're losing fat and not muscle, then this scale can help you (it has helped me so far).Plus, you can pack it in your suitcase & take it travelling with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun way to watch body fat and weight
Easy to use.It does take about 30 seconds to come up with weight and body fat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money--get a basic digital Tanita.
At this price, accuracy is a given. My scale is accurate. The added features do not add value, however.

The "memory" function simply gives the last previous session's information.Having memory capability should provide at least ten session's information, perhaps more, to provide a meaningful trend. The product description is somewhat misleading in this respect.

The body fat monitor is a) inaccurate and b) inconsistent. The manual even explains that your readings will be different at different times of the day.The best I can say about this feature is that it MAY be helpful giving you a sense of progress provided you only take readings at a specific time of day (mornings are not recommended).Keep in mind that seasonal issues (dry skin in winter, vacation in Hawaii) will alter the monitor's results.

I like Tanita's accuracy--it should be accurate for the price they charge for their scales.Everything else is basically useless in my opinion.I highly recommend you look for a Tanita branded scale that is simply a digital scale. The HD17, even though it has the memory function, appears to provide the same level of accuracy but saves $30+ over the BF681.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works well for me
We bought this several months back.I got it to help me be inspired to lose a little weight around the middle and my wife is very thin so she likes it to keep track of her body fat %.
It was pretty easy to set up for the 4 of us in our house, even though I had to read the instructions... and with a push of a toe button, a 2 second pause and standing on the pads for a few seconds it gives you lots of information.
My wife likes it and I am completely satisfied with this product after several months use.
I lost about 11 pounds so far, now to get the body fat % under control... :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great battery life!
I just passed 1 year of owning this scale, and I would like to report that the battery has not needed replacing yet! Between myself and my husband, this gets used several times a week.

I also love the accuracy of the scale and the body fat percentage, and the fact that it always weighs the same. I recently started working out regularly, and I like to use the scale to monitor my body fat. It's much quicker and easier than having it measured at the gym, and although it might not be 100% accurate, I mostly care about the downward trend. Unless you're a serious athlete, it is most likely accurate enough for your needs.

I bought a Tanita scale because I knew they are the best, and so far this one is living up to that!

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and consistent results
I really like this scale. Much better than our old scale and it always returns consistent results.I have compared the results to the scale at our gym and they are both the same. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY way to measure body fat
I am in the military, and because of that, we have to be within certain body fat standards.I've been taped many times, sometimes accurately and sometimes not.I've had the calipers used on me, and I've used the calipers at home. Both ways yield somewhat variable results, not to mention that they are very time consuming. This scale has been the only thing that is right-on and consistent every time with body fat and weight.Of course, you need to use it at the same time every day to get the most accurate results, but yes, it's wonderful. After having used it for over a year, I couldn't even begin to imagine doing any kind of fitness/diet program without it.If they charged double for this scale, I'd pay it without question, it's that good.I agree that there are cheaper ways out there to measure body fat, but none are nearly as accurate, consistent, convenient, or as fast.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great, accurate scale when used right
If I had reviewed this scale a month ago, I would have given it one star -- but that's because I actually didn't know how to use a scale properly, as I recently discovered from the book "Weight Loss Kit for Dummies".I used to weigh myself on carpeted floor, which is a complete no-no -- the weight fluctuated and was unusually low; plus I weighed myself at different times of the day -- a rather daft thing to do that led to 3 to 4 lb fluctuations. When I started weighing myself properly -- on a hard, bathroom floor, at exactly 7AM when I woke up in the morning and drank some water to hydrate myself -- the scale gave wonderful, accurate readings.Stepping off the scale and coming back an hour or so later for my shower gave readings that were never more than 0.2 pounds off but usually the same.Fat readings varied widely, but all books I've read on bioelectrical impedence (the method used to measure your fat on this scale) confirm that it can only be used as an estimate, it's never entirely accurate, and to achieve weight loss you shouldn't be obsessed with perfection.Over the last month of using this scale, I've fluctuated from 44-45.5% body fat readings (yes high I know) when I started using it correctly, to 42-43.5% now four weeks later, so although the range fluctuates I can see an overall downward trend -- I haven't seen a 45% in weeks, despite the fact that I used to see it frequently four weeks ago.All in all, a good scale.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kinda frustrating!
Ok, so at first, this scale seems great. Easy to program and use, and you can see your weight and body fat percentages. BUT - turn the scale off, and then step on it again. I guarantee you will see different numbers-sometimes off by 1 or even 2 pounds! And how can a person's body weight suddenly jump by 4 percent?! Move the scale to another side of the bathroom. (Yes, we all do this!) Totally different reading than the previous two. I'm giving it two stars because it's always within 2 pounds or so, but boy, is it frustrating! ... Read more

Those participating in weight loss or fitness programs are sure to see some major changes to their bodies. But how to make sense of what is really going on in there? Taylor’s combination scale/body fat analyzer measures both weight and body fat percentage so you can make sure both are at healthy levels. A certain amount of fat in the diet is helpful in warding off major health problems and this monitor lets you know if you are within the healthy range, or over the appropriate level for your height, age, and weight. Likewise, this scale can show dieters if their slow rate of weight loss is due to a build-up of muscle from their fitness programs rather than eating the wrong foods.

To assess your weight, simply step on the scale and the LCD will display an accurate reading for up to 300 pounds of weight in just seconds. To calculate body fat, turn the power button on and follow the scale’s prompts to enter in your height, age, and gender. Next, simply step on the ridged platform and using BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) technology, the scale sends a harmless electric current through your body to report your body fat and weight readings together in about 10 seconds. A display graph shows where your body fat percentage ranks on the charts according to national health experts. The scale saves personal data for up to four family members so there is no need to re-program information at every use. Because of the mild electrical current involved in taking body fat measurements, Taylor cautions adults with pacemakers and internal medical devices, pregnant women, professional athletes, and children under the age of 18 not to use the product. Taylor covers this scale/body fat analyzer under a lifetime warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It really doesn't work
After reading several comments I tried to proof my scale is working properly. However, like someone else wrote the scale is not consistant. I weight myself several times and noticed very considerable diferrences in readings. Like some one else I even tried placing an additional amount of weight in my hands. The scale gave me several readings for the same amount of weight. Now! A digital scale is supposed to be percise...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
First of all, the battery that was supposed to be enclosed was not. When I bought a 9 volt battery and installed it, it would not stay attached when putting it back in the battery compartment. Finally, I got a read out, and entered my height and age. Then I stood on the scale and got nothing - no weight, no body fat, nothing, but the word ERROR, at which point I boxed it up and sent it back for a refund.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tempermental scale
I have had my scale for several years now.The price was right. The weight reading seem accurate, and the body fat seems to be consistent, but I am not sure how accurate it is.I have lost weight lately (and I am sure body fat) and the scale confirms this. The body fat measurement are high if I drink a lot of water or am bloated! This may be the variability some people are referring to.My problem is that every so often the scale will not give me any reading at all!It displays an EE instead of a reading (it is not the battery).I have found that it needs to be on a VERY level surface, with no vibrations. It will only work in certain locations, and it will go off by itself if the battery is left in.I am beginning to be convinced that it is sensitive to barometric pressure, as there is a high-pressure front coming in and my scale will not work.I might recommend avoiding some frustration and trying a different brand of scale with fewer quirks if you can find one for a comprable price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Taylor 5553
I have had the scale for about a year now and have had no problems with it. Weight measurement seems to be accurate. The body fat analyzer seems to measure alittle high, but works good enough to track my progress with my percentage body. I also bought this scale because it was rated high in consumer reports. I would recommend this scale highly because of the prize and options.

2-0 out of 5 stars Scale is okay.B.F. analyzer doesn't work.Plus the NOISE
It works great as a scale.Comparing what it reads to friends' scales is accurate. However, the body fat analyzer is crazy.Giving extremely different measurements within a 10 minute period.Plus it is so LOUD.Is next to impossible not to wake someone up when I weigh myself in the morning. As a scale it works, but for less money I could easily have a regular scale to tell me the same information. ... The 2-in-1 technology of the Tanita Ultimate body-fat monitorand scale means a more precise evaluation of your overall health. Inaddition to measuring pounds, the scale determines body-fat percentagewith an at-home version of bioelectrical impedance analysis, the samemethod doctors use. Here's how it works: when you activate the body-fatmonitor, the scale transmits safe, low-level electrical signals throughyour body and measures how quickly they travel. Readings display inone-percent increments and take into account your age, gender, andheight. Programming on this model is very straightforward with simplebuttons, clear prompts, and an easy-to-read display. Though notcalibrated for very fit individuals or athletes, the scale does have aweight-only option and a 300-pound capacity. 1-0 out of 5 stars Infuriating device is a huge hassle
You have to get on your knees and enter in a plethora of information every time you want to check your body fat--it is incapable of storing even 1k worth of data.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good product but lacks a few things
I have been using it for almost a year now. Over all I like it a lot. Here is what I think is good or bad in it:

1. Measuring Weight (that's what its supposed to do and should be good at... right!). If you are planning to loose weight you can watch your weight go down over days in 1/2 lb steps.
2. Doesn't loose its calibration (some other weight scales require calibration).
3. You can measure body fat (not very accurate though)
4. Its gentle on batteries so they last for a long time.

1. Body fat measurement is very inaccurate even if you fall with in the specified weight and height limits. They can be completely off if you use this scale after taking a shower.
2. You can't store the weight or body fat trends (yeep keep a log book handy if you want to record your weight).
3. Body fat measurement could be some what difficult to set up. Controls could have been easier than how they are.

Overall a very good product.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated!
I got this scale because I read that it would store previous measurements to track your weight history. After reading the manual, it apparently does not do that.

Additionally, according to the manual the scale's body fat measurement does not work properly if you are considered "athletic" or "fit", which makes that feature useless for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the money, but lack of memory is annoying
We have used the Tanita body fat scale for many years to help us watch our weight and keep track of our body fat. While I loved its usefulness and low price, in the long run we moved on to a new scale.

First, the good things about this scale. It's relatively cheap when you compare it against other body fat scales. It's also easy to use just for weight. You simply kick a button with your toe to turn it on, step on it, and it shows you your weight to within .5 pounds.

Doing the body weight is more annoying though. You have to press a button to get it going, choose adult or child, then choose male or female, and then sit there and scroll through the numbers to find your height. If you miss it, start all over again.

Then you stand on the scale in bare feet. In essence the scale sends a mild electrical signal through your body - you can't feel it at all. By knowing your height and watching how fast the signal takes to get through your system, the scale can determine how much of you is made up of fat. That number is displayed for you after around 5 seconds.

I really liked the scale but found that sequence to get to the body fat REALLY annoying after a while. We moved up to a Taylor system that had a memory so you input your values once and then just "recalled" them later with one button. We also discovered when we did this that our Tanita was about a pound off, and that its body fat measurement was a full 3.5%. So while the Tanita had been good at general ranges, apparently it wasn't extremely accurate.

I'd recommend this Tanita as a great way to get into body fat scales if you don't have one yet. But if you are actually going to start paying attention to it, I'd really recommend going with a unit that has a memory in it. They aren't that much more money and they are VERY worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Measure body fat percentage at a low price.
This is a great scale that is ready to use right out of the box.Just turn it on, using the toe button located on the bottom right side, and step on. Within seconds you have your weight displayed very accurately within a half pound.

The trump card feature of this scale is its ability to measure you body fat percentage (using bioelectrical impedance analysis). Just enter some basic info about yourself (adult/child, male/female, and height) and 5-4-3-2-1 (yes, the scale really counts down) you have your body fat percentage. The manual has a chart listing acceptable body fat levels so you can keep track of where your at.
The scale cant measure body fat for everyone. Very small children and very fit (athletes) individuals will give false body fat readings(however, weight is always measured accurately).

The only major flaw with the scale is that you have to manually input your age, gender and height every time you want to measure body fat. A memory feature should have been added to save your information, as it can become very annoying to re-enter your information again and again. A memory feature is available on Tanitas higher end model scales
The digital display is fairly easy to read (some scales have larger readouts).

Overall it is a nice, compact scale that is fast and accurate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very accurate!Very easy to use!
I read these reviews and wondered how the Bodybuilding Federation could endorse a product that got these bad reviews.

So, I bought one.I love it!

Now, I can see how some people may not have been able to use it effectively, because it only opens a few inches and is probably more for fit people than for heavy people.Bit if you are fit and just want to see how fit, this is the device for you.

I find the results very repeatable. Each of the three measurement sites have been repeatable within 1mm over dozens of trys.

The Myotape is also cool.Use it and to get your body fat percentage and see just how close the number is to the number the calipers give you.Amazingly, for me, the number was identical.

Great product!Much better than my body fat scale which gives me double the number that this gives me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to use
I was hoping this would be a fairly accurate way to measure my body fat percentage. The instructions on how to pinch and measure fat are inadequate. The pictures are lousy and leave you with no idea of where or how you're supposed to pinch.I get different results every time I take a measurement. Not very effective.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
I was absolutely disgusted when I opened the package, and the supposed "Improve your measuring skills" booklet was not included.I also need to mention that the measurements may be close, but the calculation is RIDICULOUSLY inaccurate.I sent a complaint to the company and recieved no response whatsoever.Manual calipers may be less convenient, but at least you can do the math yourself, and come up with an accurate number.Save your money!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to use
True, the included instructions are a bit hard to understand, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy to use. It might be a little easier for men because the sites to measure are easy to get to (chest, tummy, leg). I found the FatTrack to be pretty consistent and the MyoTape is really easy to use. If you want to get just one..I too would suggest the can use to calculate your body fat. Something I just found out was that this item is reimbursable from most insurance medical saving accounts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Forget the Caliper and get the Myo Tape only
The problem with this caliper lies not in the product itself but in how hard it is to take consistent measurements. I don't doubt the caliper's accuracy, but I've tried measuring myself over and over and the values I get vary by as much as 15 mm. The instruction manual that it brings is far too basic and does not give a clear understanding of how to take measurements. I believe there are manuals for sale that are supposed to help you get consistent values, but I don't own one myself. Without such a manual, I would advise you to spend your money elsewhere. Also, the product description states that you can take measurements yourself, but unless you have four arms, it is impossible to do without someone to help you.
The Myotape, on the other hand, is very easy to use and will give you accurate measurements every time. It is the only reason I rated this product with 2 stars instead of only one. You are better off buying the measuring tape by itself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPER DUPER
i got this scale for Christmas last year.I was suprised to read such bad reviews about it at first.I was actually looking to upgrade to one that can measure my water percentage as well as body fat.It is a little confusing to start with, but as long as you follow the directions you should be able to set it up fine. Some people were saying that it wont allow u to change the settings but i suggest they read the directions because mine change fine.also, it may read a different weight at different times of the day because it is accurate.your body weight does change at different times of the day.Excellent scale, happy with my gift. 8)

5-0 out of 5 stars Seems very accurate
This scale seems very basic to operate and program for different users.I set my self up in just a couple of minutes. The instructions were easy to follow.I have also thought it to be very accurate each time I weigh. My kids have had a great time getting off and on and off an on to see if it weighed the same each time.It did.You can never be sure about BF% but this seemed as accurate as any other scale I've used. Not sure what good the hydration % is.I've onlyhad a problem with it tipping once.Only annoying thing is that it goes through all of your stats before you are able to weigh which takes a few seconds.

I've been please with this purchase.Good scale at a good price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good scale...
I have had this scale for over a year and have never had any problems with it.Mechanically it is as good as when I purchased it.

You also can program various things into it - ie 2 users- but for the life of me I cant figure out how.The instuctions are not especially intuitive. That is why I didnt give it a 5 star rating.

If I was going to buy this scale I would shop around for price- price on this item varies quite a bit betwee dealers and I think I paid half of the non-sale price.

For me this scale was well worth it.I have found the weights consistant - they dont very if I step on the scale repeatedly unlike non-digital scales. It was a good choice for me

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
Unless you can guarantee you'll put this scale someplace where it will NEVER be moved or kicked, save your money. Mine arrived with a dead battery, figured out after a call to their 800-number. They told me to return it to my place of purchase. I said I ordered it online. They said, OH. I replaced the battery and it worked GREAT...for about a month. It needs to be on a level flat surface, and should not be moved often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scale!
I bought this scale when I was in Weight Watchers about 9 months ago and I am very happy with it!Great deal on Amazon - $39.99 plus free shipping - in the stores it is at least $55 plus tax.I am recommending it to everyone! ... Read more

The New York bathroom scale from Soehnle has an easy-to-read display. It automatically stores and retrieves the data for up to four persons making it ideal for families. In addition to measuring body fat, the Soehnle scale also measures muscle and water to .1-percent. The total weight capacity for this scale is 330-lbs. and gives readings in 0.2-lbs. A person's weight is made up of body fat, muscle mass and body fluid. Water accounts for between 50- and 60-percent of the total depending on age and sex. It is an important constituent and means of transport in our body and must therefore be available in sufficient quantities. Since this relationship can change imperceptibly (like when trying to lose weight, during periods of training or as one ages), it is important to check this value regularly. This innovative bathroom scale from Soehnle is based on medical studies and analyses implemented and integrated with the aid of software and sophisticated technology. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Innacurate
I ordered two of these scales. Both of them were way off, sometimes not working at all.I think they were defective, so this might be a slightly tainted review.

On the other hand, I did try a working Milano, which has the same feature set as this.It was working, but was extremely inaccurate.Giving different weights every time (off by 5-10 pounds).

I do not recommend these scales, although if they delivered what they promised, it would be a great scale.

2-0 out of 5 stars Made in China
Well I was excited to get a quality product Made in Germany for a price that was adequate for a product Made in Germany. What I got was "German engeneering" made in China. I always try to avoid at all cost buying electric or other high tech products made in China because my experience with two or three of them showed me that they just lack quality and break down all the time.

Performance is ok so far. I had some mismeasurements. The personal info entered can not be deleted without deleting the info for all persons saved. A few times the scale did not recognize me. It looks better on pictures than in reality.

I don't recomend buying this product. It is overpriced for the actual product you get.

If I had known this product was made in China I wouldn't have bought it. I am still debating if I should return it as shipping costs are high.

In short, very disappointed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars no memory
This scale has no memory function, so every time you use it you have to enter your gender and height using your toes.I find this somewhat annoying, especially since entering the height involves pressing on the up button until it reaches your height, and you have to restart if you overshoot. There are similarly priced models that have a memory function, so this doesn't seem like a good buy -- I'll be returning mine shortly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to your fitness program
The Omron HBF-306 is very simple to use.Because it uses electrical resitance and calculated "wing span" to measure BF%, it's possible (due to differences in arm length) that your reading may not be 100% accurate compared to a clinical "immersion" test. However, it is definitely consistent!I also have caliper type pinchers and found them too inconsistent (unless you can pinch the same exact spot each time).

With the Omron HBF-306, you can easily track changes in your body fat % as you progress through your fitness training. You'll be able to easily tell if your losing fat and/or gaining muscle by monitoring your BF% along with your weight.Check your weight and body fat % first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for estimation, easy to use.
First, it should be noted that the hand-held and scale-based body fat analyzers are not completely accurate in determining your body fat percentage. As an example, between one day and the next, depending on your hydration level (how much water you drink, etc), your body fat percentage according to this device can increase or decrease by as much as 2%. With that said, the Omron HBF-306 is a reasonable way for normal people (like me!) to estimate our body fat percentage, and, if dieting and/or exercising, watch as it changes.

The Omron HBF-306 is very lightweight, and easy to manage with its two side grips. I would say it weighs less than your average digital camera. It's important to remember in using it that you need to stand in a certain position (arms straight out and parallel to the ground, feet shoulder width apart) when you take your measurement, or the current cannot give you a good reading. The manual included with the device discusses this along with proper use. I know we all hate reading manuals, but please do it just this once. :-)

While the device passes a very mild electrical current through you, you can't feel it. At least, I can't feel it and I'm ultra-sensitive to electricity.

It's important to remember that "obesity" is not defined by how much you weigh, per se, but by how much of your body is fat. Scales and charts won't tell you this, but a body fat monitor such as this one can give you an idea. You can be clinically obese and not look "fat" at all, and you can be technically "overweight" but be perfectly healthy. The Omron body fat analyzer can help you figure out if you are meeting your health goals.

If you are dieting and have a lot of weight to lose, you may see changes in your body fat percentage sooner. If not, then the changes are very slow. It's recommended that you calculate your body fat percentage no more than once per week, and under the same circumstances (e.g. after you get up in the morning, before you eat or drink anything).

The HBF-306 that I bought lets you enter weight in pounds and your height in inches.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase of this item. It is small, inexpensive, easy to use, and gives me a happy feeling as I watch my body fat percentage go down, slowly but surely.

3-0 out of 5 stars FYI
I never actually purchased this product. Before you do, there are some unadvertised things you should know. It was developed and calibrated using a European study because the algorithms used to calibrate bodyfat are different in Europeans and Americans. The old HBF-302 was calibrated to Americans but it has been discontinued. The information input is also done entirely in meters/kilgrams. All that means is some extra calculator work.

As I said I have not actually purchased one of these and I could be wrong. I got all this information when researching the product. (...) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Initial impressions

Lots of plus points, one negative.I'll start with the positives.

First, impressive packaging.Someone put a lot of thought into a really neatly designed pack that was easy to open and protected the scale and its equipment extremely well.UPS handled the shipment well, but even if they hadn't I think the scale would have come through ok.

Next, the scale and the remote display have a quality 'feel' about them. They have a painted satin stainless steel finish which appears to be quite durable and is warm to the touch. If it was real stainless steel I doubt it would be pleasant to step onto on a cold morning!

There are four individual memory settings, and one guest setting with no memory. The scale just has an LCD readout for your weight, but the wireless remote unit also displays the time, date, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI is an indication of the amount of fat you're carrying!).These figures can be recalled at the touch of a button so you see how well (or badly) you're progressing over time. The scale switches off when not in use and the remote display shows the time and date when on standby. The remote display requires two screws to hang it on a vertical surface, or it has legs which can support it on a counter top.

To weigh yourself you step on the scale, stand still, and wait for a couple of seconds so it can register your weight and beep. You then press a button on the remote display to see the weight come up, and then press a button to select your memory slot (1, 2, 3 or 4).Next, press and hold the "MEM' button for a couple of seconds, which enters that reading into memory and alternately displays your weight and BMI.This all takes longer to explain than to perform.

The readings appear to be repeatable to within a couple of decimal points or so.They claim to 0.02lb which seems to stand up.

Now for the negative.............. the instructions (or lack thereof). As well as being written out of order (how to change the date is on page one, but how to actually install the batteries and perform an essential synchronization is a secret until page five), the procedure for entering your height, which is essential for measuring your BMI, is entirely missing!!!

I used the free customer service number (fifteen minute wait) to find out what to do.They knew exactly what I wanted, hooray, but couldn't explain why it was missing from the instructions, boo!Anyhow, to save you a phone call, the procedure to set your height is to first press the top left button, then select the user number. Then, press and hold the 'SET' button until the display flashes, when you set your height with the arrow buttons. Finally, press 'SET' again.Repeat the process for other users.Phew!

Finally, Amazon had the best price and, as usual, delivered several days before anticipated (got to love that!).The abysmal instructions cost Oregon Scientific one star. ... Read more
