Too delicate for travel....
I have been using Norelcos for over 20 years to shave. They have certainly improved in all aspects over the years, except one - ruggedness. The floating head design in the newer shavers have become so delicate that they really cannot stand up to the tear and wear of a frequent traveler. My second one broke within a year and I have not dropped it anywhere. I suspect keeping the razor in checked-in baggage makes the plastic brittle in the typically cold baggage hold and any small knock is going to break several tabs that exist to keep the blades in place. They really need to be carried in a hard shell. Once any of these several failure points break, there is nothing you can do with the razor as you cannot get a replacement.

Avoid the current line of brands unless you use this primarily at home and never intend to drop it!

Great Shaver
This is my third Norelco, one really cheep, one nice Quadra-Action, and then this wonderful Spectra.I lova being able to adjust the sensitivity settings for my neck, the Quadra used to irritate the skin.I have been using the Spectra 8890XL for two weeks now and not once has it caused irritation and shaves closer than the Quadra used to also.

Great shave and features
I replaced my 6800 series with the 8890xl.It feels better in my hand and, surprisingly enough, the digital read-out is really convenient:it tells you how many minutes of charge you have left.The sensitivity adjustment sounded hokey to me, but I actually use it because I shave my head, face, and neck.I've owned about 5 Norelcos now and this one provides the closest shave, at least now that's it's brand new.

Not Good for Travelers but Great Shave
I Travel so much that I keep a suitcase semi-packed all the time.I keep one Norelco shaver in the suitcase all the time.

What I dislike most about the 8890 Spectra is the power supply cord.Previous Norelcos (including my 5821 Reflex)have a simple power cord with no transformer - the transformer is built into the shaver.
With the Spectra, Norelco took one giant leep backwards by placing the transformer at the plug end of the cord, and, the prongs do not even fold in like most modern power supplies.And, it is huge!The Spectra with its recharging cord take up twice the room in my already stuffed suitcase as my Reflex.Additionally, the "Stand" is a useless piece of cheap plastic - I have thrown mine out.

On the plus side; the Spectra gives an excellent shave.It is very quiet and the floating head design is better than my Reflex.

Summary:
1.Power supply takes up lots of room packing.
2.Plastic "stand" is useless.
3.Shaver is very quiet and "conforms" to face very well.
4.Shave is excellent but no better than my 3 year old 5821XL Reflex with new blades.

Personally, my next Norelco will not have all the little unnecessary goodies (or external power supply)and I will still get an excellent shave.

Quiet and comfortable
No electric has matched the blade for a close shave but the 8890 is Norelco's best effort too date. The Spectra is a solid improvement over my previous Microaction and Relex action models. The LCD minutes timer is wildly inaccurate. I usually get 60 to 80% more then the rated 70 mins and spend 3 weeks shaving with the shaver reminding me to charge at the end of each shave. Save a few bucks and get lower end model, without this feature, that shaves just as well. ... Read more
