A "nutritional" supplement with Red Dye #40 ?
Bausch & Lomb is normally associated with excellence in any vision product. That's why I'm disappointed in this product; the pro-vision properties may be great but I'll never know - I'm sensitive to the Red Dye #40 they add to color the capsule.

I was taking it regularly when I started having Red Dye sensitivity reactions - for me, mild dizziness (this is not imagined, I've had confirmed reactions to Red Dye 40 for many years). The Dye was not listed as an ingredient on the bottle, but found that it did have it when I later researched the ingredients.In fact, I think many people may have mild sensitivities to Red Dye 40 and not know it - it is surprisingly COMMON in everyday food/supplements.

I'm still looking for a "good" vision supplement for my over-40 year old eyes!

An emergency visit to the eye specialist for sudden floaters (a possible sign of retinal detachment) revealed another problem: small 'age spots' on the macula of both eyes. Symptoms of macular degeneration, a major cause of blindness. Only one family member had the problem and that was at 90, but because I was much younger the symptom is serious. The doctor handed me an eye chart to measure my vision quality at home, a bottle of Ocuvite Preservision, and a write up on a study that showed this supplement slowed down, stopped or even reversed macular degeneration. Fear is a mighty motivator. I don't miss a dose. When I first started taking them I noticed a distinct improvement with the eye chart. Since that improvement things are staying steady. My vision tests 20/20 with glasses but there has always been a slightly lousy quality. It is subjective but I felt there was more 'light' in my vision, as if higher watt bulbs were put in the light fixtures. I tried a different brand using zinc acetate instead of oxide and it seemed to be even more effective but it killed my stomach worse with each dose. So I can't take the other brand regularly. This Ocuvite is very easy on my stomach. I don't notice any side effects at all. I can take it on an empty stomach before going to bed with no problem as when I forgot to take it earlier (and I swear it when I do that my vision is noticeably better in the morning). I graded it down for two reasons. First they use that cheap synthetic 'dl' vitamin E. As this pill replaces a lot of the vitamin E that I was already taking, and as this vitamin E is very important to my vision, I resent having the synthetic, unusable 'l' version mixed in with, and interfering with the very good 'd' form of vitamin E. My eyes are a big deal. I can imagine those lousy 'l' molecules keeping some valuable macular cell from getting the protection it needs. Why they want do an anti-blindness product with cheezy ingredients boggles my mind. Second, the product is loaded with food coloring, and a filler called crospovidone that has been sneaked into almost all supplements in the last few years. Povidone chemicals (P-O-V as in poly-viny, like in poly-vinyl-chloride or pvc plastic drain pipe - get it?) used to be mainly in eye drops. Now it is hard to avoid it. I go to a lot of trouble to avoid eating this additive and I will be using the eye supplement for the rest of my life. So for now I eat crospovidone with resentment while I search for a replacement. Maybe Bausch and Lomb will see this and make a more natural product for 'lifers' like me. Meanwhile until something better comes along anyone with a family history of macular degeneration or bad vision in old age should considering taking this. And, the price on Amazons is unreal! As women get older, they tend to require calcium supplements, if they are to have any hope in warding offthe debilitating effects of osteoporosis. Even specially formulated multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplements for adults over the age of fifty do not provide the daily value of calcium required by women. So, one is often advised to take calcium supplements. Unfortunately,the tablets are sized in such a way that only a horse could comfortably swallow them.

So, Viactiv provides an easy, pleasant, and tasty alternative of getting one's necessary daily value of calcium.This calcium supplement,replete with Vitamins D and K for easier absorption of the calcium,is in the form of a soft chew, shaped something like a caramel. It is a vast improvement over those horse sized calcium supplement pills only a horse could love.Three of these tasty little chews provide 1,500 mg of calcium, 300 IU of vitamin D, and 120 mcg of vitamin K.

While it currently is available in six flavors, caramel,orange cream, strawberry cream, milk chocolate, chocolate mint, and mochaccino. I have tried only four of the six. The caramel flavor, which is, incidentally, my own personal favorite, tastes for all the world like a real, honest-to-goodness caramel. Eatingit is a mouthwatering, flavorful experience, one that all caramel lovers should enjoy.

The orange cream flavor tastes just like acreamsicle,making it a tasty morsel to which one looks forward to having the requisite three times a day. Orange cream is one of my personal favorites, second only to caramel.

The fact that this calcium supplement is available in a milk chocolate flavor should make all chocoholics happy. Its rich chocolate taste, reminiscent of a Tootsie Roll in terms of flavor and texture, makes for a delectable, pleasant experience. That it is actually good for you makes it even better

The combined chocolate and coffee flavors of mochaccino should serve to make all chocoholics and coffee lovers happy. Its rich mocha flavor, however, while good,was not my favorite, as I find that I prefer the other flavors that I have tried, thus far.

Each tasty chew contains twenty calories. For those of you who are following the Weight Watchers point system, three of these handy dandy little chews, irrespective of flavor, will count as one point. For those of you followingthe Atkins diet, three of these chews will add twelve carbohydrates to your daily plan. Each chew comes individually wrapped for women on the go.

Viactiv actually tastes good, which to me is a pretty big deal. I loathe pills because I have to take so many of them already, so the fact that this is chewable is definitely a bonus. It's better than a liquid, too, because, essentially, it's like a piece of calcium-enriched candy, and pieces of candy are easier to carry around than bottles of syrup.

In addition to all that, it actually tastes good. Too many flavored medicines manage only to either layer a thin veneer of sweetness over the medicinal bitterness or to completely knock you out with the most artificial "fruit" flavor you've ever tasted. Viactiv, on the other hand, tastes like a piece of chocolate. If you gave one to me unwrapped, I wouldn't have a clue that it was a calcium supplement.

Better, too, than calcium-enriched Tums, because why take an antacid when you don't need to?

Be careful out there
Ever since my oldest daughter got a stress fracture in her lumbar spine from playing tennis, I've had all the kids on calcium supplements.Right now they are taking CitraCal.

I heard a lot of the ads on radio for this product, with the catchy tune and all. The radio ads started to make me wonder if adding phosphorus with calcium would indeed be better as they claimed.So, I did a Google search and review, and also dug out my old copy of the USDA "Composition of Foods - Agriculture Handbook No. 8" which I had kept from medical school.

Conclusion:In the modern teenage diet, which is usually pretty low on milk and dairy products, it is pretty tough to get enough calcium (calcium-fortified bread and orange juice help).This is NOT TRUE for phosphorus.Phosphorus is in just about everything we eat, whether vegetable, cereal, or meat.In essence, if what you ate was once alive, it's got phosphorus in it.Phosphorus is even found in carbonated sodas (a favorite of teenagers), as phosphoric acid.

The minimum RDA for calcium and Phosphorus are the same, 800-1200 mg a day (child-adult), but our ability to get these nutrients through a modern diet is quite different.You would have to be on a very strange diet or have some sort of a malabsorption problem to not get enough phosphorus.

And here's the other problem - it is a known medical fact that TOO much phosphorus in the diet actually causes calcium loss from bones.

So the reason that Posture-D is "the ONLY leading calcium supplement that contains the ratio of calcium to phosphorus found in healthy bones" as claimed above, seems to be that nobody else was foolish enough to come out with a calcium supplement product that might actually work against calcium buildup in bone. You just don't find too many vitamin supplements with high dose phosphorus.

A final thought came to mind - one of the reasons that I turned to CitraCal was because I didn't want to use calcium carbonate, which is invariably obtained straight from oyster shells (which contain lead and other nasty stuff from offshore pollution that has to be removed - the state of California has a higher standard for lead content in supplements than the rest of the country, by the way).

The Google search also turned up the fact that the most common original source for tricalcium phosphate, the form used in Posture-D, is BONE MEAL.Bone meal also tends to concentrate a lot of not so desirable elements.Posture-D doesn't say where their tricalcium phosphate comes from, or how they processed it, but I suspect that this stuff is made from bone meal.

The Government Printing Office has a couple of more up-to-date publications that have replaced my old USDA Handbook No. 8.Go to www.bookstore.gpo.gov and plug in "food nutrient" in the Search box to get a list of the available literature from Uncle Sam.You can check out for yourself how much phosphorus you are getting in your diet from these publications to see if you really need the extra phosphorus in Posture-D.

Remember, too much phosphorus causes calcium loss in bone, not calcium buildup.
